They didn't put him on IR a 2nd time with the same injury. I don't believe they assigned a specific injury to him. McCarthy said he was really sore after the game from taking some big hits. They will retroactively say shoulder soreness or something. I understand how a team could stash players on IR but in this specific part of the rules its kind of pointless. Only a good player would be put on IR designated to return. The Packers used their spots on Rodgers and their backup RT who was to be the starting RT this year. Those guys aren't getting stashed. Ideally you would stash most of your draft picks but being on IR keeps you out of practice so it ends up being pointless and teams don't really do it.

I hope the NFL forces Ted Thompson to resign for all of this.

I know. The Packers didn't do this to stash Rodgers. Obviously. They just wanted to shut him down and get the roster spot for another player. They just failed to lie about why he went on IR for a second time. That technicality is why the Browns should sue to get him.

Ultimately this will cost them a third round draft pick or something similarly stupid.

Ted Thompson should be fired for even allowing this to happen, on top of how he's let that team slowly erode since 2011. How did they not know the damn rule?

It's also bad on the NFL. They allowed the transaction to go through. They could have said "No". Which just would have meant he would have been on the roster and the Packers just make him inactive on game day.

So the NFL didn't know the rule as well.

The catch rules are stupid too, but they're enforced.

If the NFL is going to throw up its hands and say, "oh its Aaron Rodgers! We can't enforce that rule with Him!" Than why didn't they do the same for Calvin Johnson & Dez Bryant?

It's to stop people using the IR as extra roster spots.

Because a catch or even the result of an individual game does not have nearly the impact that being forced to release a player does.

What was even the point of putting Rodgers back on IR for the final week of the season? Just make him the 3rd string Quarterback, and say you want to get a look at some other guys on the roster.

Great point.

The Packers should lose a draft pick for being dumber than the Bears.

I don’t want it to happen obviously, as a GB fan, but if the NFL did go through with it and made Rodgers a FA it would be one of the most hilarious things to ever happen in sports history.

No it won’t. As noted previously the league approved the IR tag. Also from an article discussing this...”an important note in the ESPN story is that a source stated that Rodgers would not have been cleared to play against the Vikings even if the team were still in the playoff hunt. Therefore, the Packers will surely use the aforementioned precedent to defend their decision.”

But one source said Rodgers wasn't going to be medically cleared to play in Green Bay's next game, and the Packers knew he wasn't 100 percent.

Still, not gaining medical clearance and being placed on injured reserve are two different things -- which is what drew the ire of multiple teams around the league.

Edit; Sorry...I really good dolphined up those quotes

So, if it was a new injury, why did they put him on IR for the old injury?

The Packers fed that bullshit to Shefter in an attempt to cover their ass.

It still doesn't matter. Because they officially put him on IR for the old injury.

You almost had it.

It still doesn’t matter. Because Rodgers isn’t going anywhere and any “punishment” from this will be insignificant.

The Bears should’ve tried this in year 3 of Jay and hope the league enforced it

They didn't have this current IR thing back then. And the Bears weren't gonna give up on him that early anyway. Plus they didn't have to pull this type of stunt. They could have just cut him. It's the same thing as being forced to do it by breaking this current rule.

It is the merger of SAG and AFTRA.

Come to think of it, I wonder if those paid spots they do conform to SAG-AFTRA wage scales. If they're full voting members that means they can't contract for non-union rates.
