Yeah, Springsteen post Born in the USA is pretty awful. I also didn't like Nebraska. Born to Run is the gold standard, The River is really good, but a little long, Darkness on the Edge of Town is delightful, and I like the bloated jamming on The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle.

Post 85, the only thing he did that wasn't completely awful was Magic, and that wasn't very good. Meet Me in the City off of the River re-release was pretty good.

Conversely, I haven't liked much Tom Petty did after Wildflowers. To me, Damn the Torpedoes is his gold standard.

Oh well, RIP.

Southern Accents is up there too.

I happen to really like Dave Grohl, but I had this exact same thought earlier today,
along the lines of 'Tom Petty was Dave Grohl when Dave Grohl was still in diapers........'.
What American kid who picked up a guitar in the early to mid 80's didn't wanna be Tom Petty?
He might still be clinically alive, but I think we know how this ends up.....

And fuck Dave Grohl.

I was surprised to learn today Grohl played with the Heartbreakers for a while in a pause between when Stan Lynch first left and was officially fired.

I remember he sat in with them on SNL...not too long after Cobain killed himself.

I think it was technically without the Heartbreakers but Full Moon Fever was always my favorite. Mostly because of Yer So Bad. That's one of my favorites.

I'll also add that the anthology Album is fucking brilliant. Even being a greatest hits, there are some deeper cuts. You can pop that in and it's gold from beginning to end.

I'd probably go with Damn The Torpedos for a Heartbreakers album. Wildflowers is the gold standard for his solo work, and probably his best performance as a whole, IMO.

I'm also a fan of the She's The One Soundtrack he did with the Heartbreakers. Lots of good stuff on there and some interesting covers as well.

Some good shit on Nebraska.

When you combine the Nebraska LP with all of the outtakes and alternate versions from those sessions, what you have is a masterpiece. 81-82 is by far my favorite Springsteen era.

One of the Nebraska outtakes is a rare little nugget called "Born in the U.S.A." It's terrific. Good song, wish it made the cut, but at least they didn't mess with it to make it more marketable.

Yep, it’s got Walls and Angel Dream, the definitive versions of which can be found on the Fillmore 97 bootlegs (the 2/7/97 show is the one iirc, he did a gang of shows at the Fillmore throughout that month).

I can not believe that he gave those songs to one of the biggest hacks in recent history - Edward Burns. The actor/director/writer/producer who makes very important films.

Anyone see the 60 minutes episode about the DEA rolling over for the drug companies? This might be appropriate...Thanks Obama.

Whoever prescribes oxy, fentanyl, Xanax, and sleeping pills should lose their license. Physician and pharmacist

who knows how many different doctors he went to for that mix. He was just on tour so he probably had a different doctor in every city.

He was a mess. They claim he drugged the tour with fractured hip for the fans and learned of the full hip break day he died. Ok. Dr. Nick special Elvis.

One article I read said "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that of the more than 64,000 US overdose deaths in 2016 from all drugs, more than 20,000 were attributed to synthetic opioids, many of them related to fentanyl and its variations."

Scary shit.

My gut and nothing else tells me he never got off of his heroin addiction. There is some quote there that sounds like that. He might have lived off the docs for his injuries for years.

Reading more this morning shows he also had Acetylfentanyl. That is not a prescription form in the US. Says many use as a designer drug/heroin substitute.

I know his touring holistic medicine/chicropractic guru. I need to ask him what the point of his herbal remedies and teas were if he was a walking pharmacy anyways. He did mention the broken hip and him being hopped up on pain killers a few days after his death but never said anything about concern for an OD. Ill get a better story from him this summer if I see him.....its not like he has a tour to work this year.

I had a client brake his back, they put him on oxy and fentanyl. Was at the doctor and started slurring his speech so they admitted him. The records are hilariously incompetent. On one page it says he had a reaction to too much medication and lists Oxy and fentanyl and then it states that they took him off the medication. On the very next page he is discharged with instructions to restart the oxy and fentanyl. A week later he is at home in the shower and passes out and falls hard and suffers an even more serious back injury that requires immediate surgery.
