Permanent Waves is my personal favorite. They routinely apologize for the post-Signals synth era (esp. Lifeson, understandably)

They have never "apologized" for their synth period - hell, the first SIX songs on the Clockwork Angels tour setlist were from that period.

and thank their fans for sticking with them through it. They really lost their way during that period. debatable

2112 has to be their masterpiece, maybe the best prog album ever Arguably not even top 3 of their catalogue. Best prog album ever? Not even close. Your opinion, though, but bad.

But they have at least one really good song on every album up through Signals. Should have stopped that sentence after the word "album"

Geddy Lee actually a solo album in the early 2000s. It's not very interesting, basically sounds like songs Rush rejected. Probably foretelling the whole LeeLifeson deal. What? The album, while not a standout, is not very Rush,-like, either; at that time, however, he didn't even know if Rush was going to reconvene after Neil's family tragedies. Oh, and BTW, Alex did a solo album at the time as well, likely for similar reasons.

Hmmm. I wasn't even trying to be controversial--that 2112 isn't in their top 3 is just silly. It's their definitive work. These responses seem to be shockingly ignorant of primary source materials re: the synth stuff. And Lee himself said the solo album was bad & that he wasn't comfortable playing w/o the other guys. It sounds exactly like the Rush albums that followed Neil's return, which were bad. I loved them when I was a kid but they peaked in the 70s and were never really relevant after Signals except to the hard-core

I agree with you on this one Danny. Rush was great in the 70s into the very early 80s. Clearly Minooka Meatball is also a Rush meatball. They are just a step below Springsteen fans in terms of misplaced worship. And I say this as a fan.

Geddy's solo album came at a time when the band was on hiatus, not even knowing if they were getting back together. OF COURSE, Lee would say he was uncomfortable without the only two guys he played with for the previous 25 years.

The albums that followed Neil's return were ALL better that that turd Test For Echo. Vapor Trails had some monster playing, but was disjointedly recorded and horribly mixed. Feedback was a neat covers EP. Snakes and Arrows sounded much better than Vapor Trails, but the songs for the most part plodded along. Clockwork Angels, however, was BY FAR the best album they did since Counterparts, and maybe even Moving Pictures - it was THE type of album I would hope they released after they returned, but was worth the wait.

My Rush album rank (not including the live stuff):

1) Moving Pictures
2) Permanent Waves
3) Clockwork Angels (yep - I said it)
4) Hemispheres (if for "side" 2 only)
5) *maybe* 2112 (if for side 1 only)
6) *maybe* Counterparts
7) Grace Under Pressure (GREAT songs, and maybe Peart's best lyrics, but hampered by thin '80s production)
8 ) A Farewell To Kings (if only for Xanadu and Closer To The Heart)
9) Power Windows
10) Hold Your Fire
11) Signals
12) Presto
13) Roll The Bones
14) Fly By Night
15) Vapor Trails
16) Snakes And Arrows
17) Feedback
18) Caress Of Steel
19) Test For Echo
20) The First One

Still, each and every one of these has at least something listenable and unique.

Hold Your Fire is a really strong record. Went through the entire catalog recently and this one really stood out. My Rush sensibilities have no doubt changed over time.

Any Rush meatball who claims that Clockwork Angels or any of the "new stuff" is better than 2112 should have to sit before a panel of fellow Rush meatballs and defend their position. I don't get the first album hate--even the band doesn't seem to like it. I think it's great and Finding my Way is one of the great 1st song / 1st album entries ever.

2112 is SOOOOOOO overrated - sure, it was a (mostly) great side 1, but side 2 was "meh" for the most part. Nevertheless, I get the icon status, and what it did for the band at the time, but they got WAY better after that. Even Neil thinks that they didn't hit their stride until Moving Pictures.

The first album was extremely derivative and blatantly Zeppelin-esque, another thing that the band admits to. It also shows how Peart replacing Rutsey was the best thing that could have happened to them; if not for that, they probably wouldn't have gotten past albums 2 or 3.

The thing about Rush though is their fans like what they like. Varied opinions on all of it for sure. As far as the band though I love that in whatever period you look at they recorded what they wanted and how they wanted and trusted themselves and their fans.

Sometimes all a band has to do in order to be great is never sell out themselves or their fans.

I became a much larger fan after watching Beyond the Lighted Stage . They seem like genuinely nice guys who are very appreciative of their fans and take a lot of care in cultivating their relationship with them .

Personally, I think things went downhill when they parted ways with producer Terry Brown. Hemispheres represents the peak for me, though I like most of their work through Moving Pictures. After that, there are only a handful of songs that interest me, such as Subdivisions, Losing It, Nobody's Hero, and The Garden (and a few others).

Peart has written some fascinating books, mostly related to his traveling, particularly after he lost his daughter to a car accident and then his wife to cancer. He once said he considers himself both one of the luckiest and yet unluckiest people around. It makes you wonder...if you could have his life, would the good be worth more than the bad?

It is a hell of a question. Agreed on his books and he is just overall very interesting.

Quite frankly, I don't understand how JORR doesn't feel the same about Geddy Lee. Baseball fan/collector, wine snob/collector, wearer of sport coats - he's got it all.

Listening to R40 Live in Toronto...such a great document of the last tour.

And count me amongst those that think Clockwork Angels is easily in their top 3 albums...definitely better than 2112

I dig the band, the musicianship is incredible...

but I just cannot get comfortable with Geddy Lee's vocal. Just sounds like knives to my ears.

Clockwork Angels starts out pretty weak. The first couple of songs are snoozers.
