The Cubs did have a small payroll when they where rebuilding.. LOL Why would you not?

Because in general, it's dishonest to charge MLB prices (almost the highest in the league) for an intentionally non-competitive MLB team.

Boras is going to get the highest amount he can for Bryant regardless if the Cubs started his clock early or not. You really think Boras would have given them a discount for starting Bryant early? If anything Boras respects Theo as a business man and not some idiot who gave away 25Million.

If Boras was a GM he would have handled Bryant the exact same way. He is a business man, not a drinking buddy. As a Sox fan, why do you guys even care how much the Cubs will end of paying Bryant?

You didn't answer my question. Do you think Boras would have given the Cubs a discount if they started the clock early? Boilermaker? same question.[/quote]

You only get the answer to one question for free. You should have been more judicious with the use of questions in your post.

Correct, which makes all these "Boras will be mad posts" pointless.

It is not dishonest when they tell you what they are doing and put most of that money back into the product.

You think the White Sox would not charge full price for a ticket if people would pay it? The Bulls still charge full price for a ticket and they have sucked for awhile now.

You price the tickets at a point people will pay for them. Only an idiot would turn down a profit.

Actually 2/7 and he supposedly turned down more.

Good move assuming last year wasn't a mirage.

REPORT: Cubs Re-Signing Brian Duensing for Two Years, $7 Million http://www.bleachernation.com/2018/01/1 ... 7-million/

Jon Heyman

@JonHeyman

Duensing had deals for significantly more money elsewhere but liked the cubs experience so much he wanted to return. Can’t blame him. Chicago’s the best (in the summer)

Minor-league deal for Gimenez. He's tight with Yu Darvish.

OK cool.

http://www.bleachernation.com/2018/01/2 ... u-darvish/

The Chicago Cubs went through a whole lot of catchers last year, with all of Willson Contreras, Miguel Montero, Alex Avila, Rene Rivera, Victor Caratini, Kyle Schwarber, and Taylor Davis seeing time at one point or another. At present, though, they stand ready to give time in 2018 to only Contreras and Caratini, with perhaps Schwarber grabbing a few starts along the way.

That’s why we’ve been convinced for a long time that the Cubs would add a veteran backstop to work into the mix, either as *the* back-up catcher (with Caratini heading back to Iowa to open the season), or as depth at Iowa for when the need inevitably arises. And it sounds like they may have landed their guy:

Gimenez, 35, was excellent in back-up duty two of the past three seasons, and before that, he was perfectly solid as a back-up catcher. Interestingly, some of those most recent years came with the Rangers, and …

Hmm. Was Yu Darvish's personal catcher for a while with #Rangers. Remained in touch with him this offseason. https://twitter.com/ChrisCotillo/status ... 4511542277

Since it’s a minor league deal at a position of need for the Cubs anyway, I don’t think we can say this a David Ross-Jon Lester situation, but I also don’t think that aspect should go ignored. Having Gimenez in the fold can only help with the Darvish pursuit.

Setting aside the Darvish aspect, Gimenez has typically been an above-average defensive catcher who rated as one of the better framers in baseball last year, though he was slightly below average the year before, and about average the year before that. As a receiver, then, he’s probably an above-average defender and average framer. That’s just fine for a back-up.

He’s hit just .218/.309/.345 in his big league career (80 wRC+), though two of his average or better offensive seasons came in two of the past three years. He’s also posted a career 107 wRC+ against lefties, so he can certainly be useful at the dish in the right match-ups.

Gimenez also spent parts of 2012-14 with the Rays, so he’ll be familiar (and vice versa) with Joe Maddon and Jim Hickey.

So, then, even setting aside the Darvish stuff, on a minor league deal, I freaking love this signing. The Cubs absolutely needed someone exactly like Gimenez, and if they weren’t going to bring back Alex Avila or Rene Rivera (the latter has since signed with the Angels), then I’m totally good with this route. Bring Gimenez to Spring Training, and then make a decision on whether you want him or Caratini to break camp as the backup.

Yay! Another special catcher for a pitcher you don’t have.

Minor league deal wouldn't have him on the 40 yet.

Is there a team that fetishizes their backup catcher more than the Cubs

Worst case scenario is that they need somebody to catch at AAA, as well as to catch in road Spring Training games.

Best case scenario is that he catches Darvish's 32 starts and maybe 10 more Wednesday/Sunday afternoon games. If they can keep Schwarber's catching talent up to the point where he can catch 4-5 innings a month as a third catcher, then they can use Schwarber or Contreras to PH for him once Darvish is out of the game.

If Contreras was to get hurt, Caratini would get the majority of the starts.

If Caratini goes back to AAA, I'd expect them to resign Taylor Davis to be the backup C/1B, since nobody including Taylor gives a shit if he rots on the bench.

It's funny because year in and year out the White Sox have the shittiest defensive metrics for their catchers. And they wonder why their young pitchers struggle? Maybe one day Rick Hahn(TheoTheLess) will understand the importance of the position too?

When the White Sox are a backup catcher away from a World Series, then you may talk.

Schwarber clearly cannot handle pitchers with tons of movement. He specifically had trouble with Carl Edwards Jr. I'm a bigfan, but the guy should only be catching pitchers with straight heat.

Tyler Flowers had excellent defensive metrics but I'd hardly consider him a good catcher

Letting Flowers walk was not a good decision by TheoTheLess. He is one of the biggest bargains in baseball now.
