I'm sure he's just as gainfully unemployed in France as he was here.

Even with the French government's bureaucratic labyrinth and the countries' general disinterest in being on time for literally anything people in France are much much much more productive in 30 hours a week than Americans are in 50. Its truly incredible.

The majority of the jobs created by solar are in the installation and creation of large solar farms. These jobs rely on a stead supply of affordable panels for any source. There are more sources outside the US than from the inside the US. Even if by some magic this meant an increase in production of panels in the US, the number of jobs in the manufacturing sector is small compared to the downstream installation and support. If tariffs ramped up, maybe that would promote manufacture in the US and all for growth in both manufacture and downstream, but by starting high it just seems to be attacking a growing job market. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see this as hurting anything but US jobs.

Not supposed to “work”. Supposed to be used for leverage and aggravate the Chinese stock market.

Good luck with that.

it's not all about China, the washing machine tariff will hit South Korea more than anyone.

China subsidizes the solar panels which makes them as cheap as they are. By putting a tariff on them, the subsidies are basically wasted money. The point is to piss them off, not make US companies competitive.

that is correct.

As solar has higher initial costs, those lower cost panels were the only thing keeping the industry viable. No one will pay for US manufactured panels as their cost is too high relative the cost of fossil fuels. I'm by no means an environmentalist, but I was looking at getting panels a few down the road as cheap panels will pay for themselves over their lifetime. There is a very poor ROI with US built panels.

As I've said before, protectionism is idiotic and there is a long line of past examples that highlight its failures. Trade is not a zero sum game and when you have free trade, all parties involved win. Our President is a fucking moron who has no clue of how trade works.

I think I've made it clear I hate Hillary, but at least she and her husband understood trade.

He loves his France, with their minuscule GDP growth rate of 1.2% (during a strong global economic growth period no-less). Meanwhile US target growth rates are approaching 3%.

The sad thing is in many ways, Hillary Clinton's views on trade were the traditional GOP viewpoint. It's a sad day when neither party is in favor of market liberalization.

Excuses, excuses. You're voluntarily in that common market. Not that it matters, the French work ethic, or lack of one, would have you guys getting killed anyways

I've changed my mind, you're perfect for France. Laziness is inherent within their society.

Most Trumpkins can't afford a high end LG washer to begin with. They're the only ones still going to Sears for a low-end one.

It kind of sucks for me as I have to get an entire new set of appliances this summer. It's only 20% extra on the washer, but oh well.

 He's definitely not a conservative, yet in many ways he has pushed a traditional conservative agenda. It's a very strange presidency to say the least.

There's some peculiarities that take some getting over. People are just not going to be motivated to do anything for you if you dont speak French. Even I get on shit from time to time because my accent is O B V I O U S.

But once you get used to it its much better than the USA. Americans are very fat and very litigious. French, despite their many faults, tend to look to the PMU for their big payday dream and not being misgendered in an email or slipping on a floor. You dont hear the people of Le Havre blaming American bombers in WW2 for all their problems the way many groups in America obsessively blame the US government. Even though Le Havre was destroyed much much much more recently than slavery or westward expansion.

I dont doubt that the USA was once a great country. Perhaps the greatest ever, I remember the 90's well enough. But now its terrible and only getting worse. I hope you find your own way out, even burritos like you dont deserve the fate that awaits you.

The United States then and now are not the same country, not the same people and are not of the same culture. They are completely different entities.

If our burrito culture of today existed then the entire world would've ganged up on us to cleanse it of this world. Hell, if Patton or MacArthur saw what would become of the USA they would've turned the tanks around.

What’s your point?

Maybe force people to buy American made panels and converters instead of cheap chinese junk.

and makes solar unaffordable to anyone. Now everyone loses. US panels are still too expensive to be a viable option for anyone to utilize with any hope of a return on the investment.

Don't you see why we need free trade? It's the only reason inflation in the US has remained about 2% on average over the last 20 years despite expansionary monetary policy which in any other environment would've triggered excessive inflation (remember quantitative easing and a federal funds rate of 0%) The only reason those didn't cause increases in inflation was our ability to cheaply import foreign made goods.

Once again, The US economy is strong at the moment with low unemployment. Companies are simply unable to fill vacant spots in many positions. We simply do not have the labor capacity to increase our production of goods, which already accounts for over 15% of global GDP.

The reason we import many goods and is simply that we consume far more than we could ever produce.

Ogie, I have never met anyone with whom I can agree and disagree--from post to post and even in the same post--as much as I can with you. (Weird sentence structure.)

you know, these idiotic gender neutral bathroom issues (and yes they are idiotic) have almost no impact on anyone's daily life. You probably wouldn't even hear about them throughout most of the country unless you are specifically looking for Internet outrage pieces on the web. So in other words, this stuff only bothers you if you allow it to do so. 90% of this country doesn't give a fuck either way and cares about actually important matters.
