Long story short...My son is being nice to a neighbor who has had a rough time, is socially inept, and can be annoying. Another kid in his class, an acquaintance, is giving him a hard time about being nice to this kid. What should he do? What do I/we do?

If your son's relationship with the neighbor isn't negatively affecting his own responsibilities or decisions, then I don't see why he should care what the other "friend" says.

A friend doesn't shit on somebody being friends with somebody else.

Tell him to ask his bully friend to explain himself logically. Tell the annoying friend why he’s helping the disadvantaged kid and press the bully on why he wants to pick on kids and why it’s bad to be nice to them, etc.

If you're saying that your son is being harassed/bullied for being friends with....whoever he chooses....then the people doing the harassing aren't his friends. Unfortunately, that's a tough (yet important) lesson that kids need to learn in those awkward years: you can't be friends with everybody. I think that's one of the hardest things to accept for some kids that age.

But again, I may be misunderstanding the issue.

Even though the other kid is different he shouldn't stop being friendly with him because most kids dislike him. Don't follow the crowd and stay true to himself.

Some people are just assholes, just like around here. No one else can stop them if they can't stop themselves. Your son has to decide which people are best for him to associate with.

This is a good lesson on being your own person. Tell the other kid that he likes talking with him and is going to continue. The other kid will either get bored or try and bully your kid too but as long as your kid doesn't get upset by either it won't last long.

The more forceful the better.

Nothing. If the kid is an asshole, his parents are likely assholes too, or they just don't care that their kid is an asshole. That ship has sailed.

I don't think they are, they are a bit clueless and drop the ball quite a bit.

So, they fit the second category. We deal with that, too. In fact, she is over here right now, along with two other kids. The other two (sisters) are sweet, polite, and respectful, every time they are here, because their parents don't let them be assholes. This one is a huge pain in the ass. She is mean and bossy. She has even put her hands on my younger son, who is autistic. We have tried dozens of times to talk to her parents about her behavior, but it never changes. We only put up with it because my son loves her so much.
