As in anything, you have to weigh cost vs. value. I have one getting a Business Degree at Illinois and one getting a business degree at Carnegie Mellon. They both have pretty good grades. The Illinois grad is inteviewing for jobs making $30k in year one, the CMU grad is interviewing for jobs making $55k in year one. Looks like the higher cost of education will pay off right away.

I will tell you that starting salaries based on where you went to school matter very little in Engineering field. Now, that could very well be because math is math and the field is very Code driven.

It certainly can be about where you graduated from, but why not 2 years at a Junior College for the core credits? Certainly not 20k a year.

I will say that for some companies it certainly does matter where you graduate from. For instance, I consulted at Goldman Sachs for a year and everyone there was Ivy league, Carnegie Mellon and similar schools. My own company recruits from what are considered Tier 1 schools and recently stopped recruiting at Northern Illinois for example.

Where you graduated from means a great deal for law. There's a misconception that all lawyers are filthy rich. That's not really true; it's bimodally distributed, with a bunch clustered around $40,000 a year to start and a smaller group clustered around $150,000 to start. What determines which group you are a part of is which school you go to. Everyone except the bottom 5% of the Harvard class is guaranteed, if they want it, a $100,000+ job in New York.

I don't judge at all. I just look at which of the biggest litterboxes in the Southside they live in. Alsip, Posen, Chicago Heights or Hometown. I have found that the educational and intellectual levels are pretty much the same in all these fine locations, with the exception of Hometown which seems to produce some of the biggest dregs of all!

The point I'm making Doug is that it DOES matter where you go to school because, as Vince noted, you will be eligible to be considered for jobs that aren't available to those from other schools. They won't be doing the same jobs. The CMU grad is interviewing for investment banking positions on Wall Street. These firms only interview and hire grads from top tier schools. My son who is graduating from Illinois has no chance to even be considered for those jobs. Those schools don't interview and don't consider grads from schools like Illiinois. And I beg to differ with you on your field, but engineering graduates from Stanford, MIT, Cal Poly and other top tier engineering schools absolutely are earning higher salaries than engineering grads from other schools. They are being offered opportunities for jobs that aren't even available to other engineering grads. I used to work for a company that hired a lot of engineers and paid very well. But they recruited and hired only from specific schools. State schools weren't on the list.

From personal experience:

1) Asshole + Top Tier School Degree = Arrogant Asshole
2) Asshole + State School Degree = Depressed Asshole
3) Grinder + Top Tier School Degree = Ambitious Asshole
4) Grinder + State School Degree = Insecure Asshole

In my position I hesitate to hire anyone from a "top" business school for an entry level position. I allow the audit firms to grind them down for a couple years and them bring them onboard when they acquire a little humility.

Totally agree Rob. My personal experience is that I don't care what school you came from, but what effort you put in to do well at that school. I like hiring kids that had to work their ass off to put themselves through school. I also like hiring CERTAIN student athletes because the work ethic and the schedule management skills are superior, in my experience.

well, if you can get into the schools you listed you are in the top tier anyway and probably deserve as much. But, those folks will ceiling out just like any other non-owner. It might just take a few less years to do so.

Based upon my experience there is little difference between Michigan State, Iowa, Bradley, Purdue, U of I, or UIC engineer grads. Are those considered "State" schools?

You think all companies have the same ceilings? I'd suggest you compare the total compensation (including stock options) and long-term compensation growth of electrical engineers working for silicon valley growth companies with those working for small manufacturers and get back to me.

Judging others based on their educational level strikes me as narrow-minded, superficial. I prefer to judge people based on their SAT score.

....at least that's what they say on TV

besides, education is so culturally biased anyway

Thats why I'm really questioning the 10 people so far that have voted Yes. One of the wisest women in my life, my Aunt Lola, dropped out in the 6th grade. But you would never know....

I don't think I understand the question (and I've gone to school - judge me on that). Judge people in what sense?

If you are saying that a final determination on the quality or intelligence of a person is made based on their level of schooling, then no, I would not do that.

But, I would consider their level of education as a factor in forming an idea of who a person is and the things that are important to them.

So I wouldn't judge them, per se, but I would factor it into an evaluation of a person if I had a need to evaluate someone.

Same here, except its my grandpa. I think its funny that not one person replied to this thread saying they do judge people based on their education level, yet 10 voted yes. I guess Nas was right when he said people here have trouble saying what they really feel.
