I just saw this woman on Chicago Tonight who had written a book called White Like Her. She was looking into her family genealogy and she discovered an old census with her grandfather's name on it. There was a (b) next to his name. She looked into it and discovered that (b) stood for "black". She was shocked. When she asked her mother, her mother pretended she didn't know what she was talking about, but the woman pressed and eventually the mother admitted her family was black. She swore the daughter to secrecy.

Anyway, I was struck by the whole notion of "passing" which makes it obvious race is a social construct. Here's the same person who is regarded one way when people think she's white when she would have been called all kinds of slurs and worse had people known she was black. It really hit home for me how absolutely ridiculous the entire notion of "race" really is.
