I found it free on youtube. The small youtube screen doesn't do it justice. The special effects look dated, but the acting is unreal. The casting for this movie is excellent. The guy who plays Mickey and the guy who plays Maris, perfect! I have this on those old things they called DVD's somewhere. I haven't watched it on the new tv yet. I may do that tonight

But for all you others, catch it while it's free :

btw in the beginning, what a crock that looks like now. You'll know what I mean when you watch it. Maris in my book still holds the record. Not those cheaters. Actually the Babe still hit more in less games.

I'm a Roger fan. Pretty decent flick. A slew of good books about M & M.

Agree that the actor (Barry Pepper? He was in a Spike Lee film) did an outstanding job in the role. He had the look, at the very least.

Yeah this was great when I saw it on HBO 10 years ago. Get with the times, Hawaii.

It is a good movie. Barry Pepper was always an underrated actor.

the bookends with the present day were really bad, hokey, and in hindsight...just wrong. but within the story of that year, the acting is solid and the film is pretty good.

billy crystal was an unapologetic fanboy of mantle. he makes stoneroses look like a critic of him.

in the BTS stuff, they talk about how Thomas Jane had never played baseball or swung a bat. so they had to teach him from square one. And of course, they're going to teach you who you're about to emulate. So, when Thomas Jane plays baseball, he has the exact swing of Mickey Mantle. I always thought was pretty cool.

That reminds me of another HBO baseball film, Long Gone. If I am not mistaken, some of the cast had to be taught to play baseball, as they never had before.

Pretty funny film, sort of like Slap Shot. Not a real satisfying ending, but whatever.

How does any American male living between 1930-1995 NOT KNOW how to swing a bat or hasn't played baseball in his life??

Unreal. Where do they find these people and how do they exist?

You, the guy who thinks Joey Greco is a real poster here, actually wonder about this?

Roger Maris is still the single season home run king.

Bonds, McGuire, and Sosa were all juicing so no clean player has topped him as of yet

There were rumors about Maris doing some drugs to deal w/ the pressure. I don't think they were performance enhancing. But I agree, he has the record. But more impressive is 60 in 154 by the Babe!

I got this and Long Gone on VHS. HBO really had something going with their original movies in the 80s/90s, and now they’re all largely forgotten. Made-for-TV movies have always been a ridiculous concept because there is no staying power. How are you going to air a classic like Witness To The Mob and then nobody ends up knowing about it? Shit, I’ve watched that movie like 30-40 times. The uncut 2DVD set, that is. Don’t endorse the edited single DVD where they cut out like 45 minutes of crucial footage. They fucking gutted it, the bastards.
