There's an article we should dig up on what the author called, like, the fall of the mid-budget movie. Everything is either built to be a blockbuster or an indie shoestring project with little in between. Here it is: http://flavorwire.com/492985/how-the-de ... makers-mia

The other part is not just Americans going to movies less but The Goddamn Chinese going to movies much much more, and those drone bees will eat up anything where robots are blowin' shit up amidst Chinese product placement. Which one is it where they have to have a Chinese guy announce that Hong Kong is their property and they must protect it? X-Men? Transformers? I dunno.

That is a good point. Production companies now make movies that cater to foreign, especially Chinese, markets. That's why The Rock never makes a flop. Throw him in a movie against giant storms or monsters or flying fucking cars, and it's box office gold.

I only go to probably one or two movies in the theaters in a year now because, like you said, everything is either an indie, which can be easily found on IFC or Amazon Prime, or a superhero/comic book movie, which have gotten so stale to me.

there's definitely truth to that, but i think the other trend that's going to choke the film industry is the growing Streaming Binge Show craze. some of these hit shows would have been films 10 years ago.

for me, i thought "war for the planet of the apes" deserved better than just getting AV nominations. it had a great script and serkis' performance as caesar was amazing.

"shape of water" will immediately be considered overrated and unworthy of a best picture win...and i can't really argue with that.

The Oscars is literally some of the worst people on this planet patting themselves on the back and giving each other awards.

At least they didn't give a standing ovation, led by Meryl Streep, to a child rapist this time.

jimmy's not alone. Ratings were down 16%. This following the lowest rated Grammy's ever. Maybe people are getting tired of being preached to by these idiots?

Watching last night I thought "Now, more than ever" was the tagline for the ceremony. They've really leaned into the preaching bit, haven't they?

"Ignoring the Oscars" vs "boycotting the NFL". Which brings you to a Clooney level of smugness faster?

There was an article in the WSJ today that discussed how the Oscar-nominated movies have essentially become the movies that no one wants to see. Only Dunkirk was in the top 15 top-grossing movies this year. It didn't use to be that way...until around 15 years ago, most Best Picture nominees were among the top grossing films. The rise of the superhero movie has had a hand in that, but for the most part, nominated movies are now pretty much ignored by the movie-going public.

Black Panther will win next year, so there is that.

Maybe, but not necessarily...Wonder Woman was a critical and box-office success but didn't get a single nomination. I was actually surprised there wasn't more made of that, given the climate. But in the context of the "superhero movie vs serious movie" debate, it made perfect sense. It will be interesting to see if Black Panther gets the same treatment (though it may legitimately be considered better than WW, whatever that is worth).

The difference is the NFL is actually entertaining.

Ignoring the Oscars is taking a stand against smug self-congratulation (and boredom)

I think a few people here have commented that when woke people get tired of using white men as a punching bag they will turn on white women next. It's kind of amusing to read about the infighting: https://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/oscars ... li=BBnb7Kz

The similarity is that nobody gives a flying fuck about your boycott. You're only telling people about it for the attention.

I think you would have to have watched the Oscars previously or planned to watch it for not watching it to be considered boycotting it.

I wish I was a "journalist". All you have to do is write articles about how people on Twitter react to things anymore.

There's also a "Teen Vogue has reached out" line underneath all the tweets, indicating much of the articles content was copied from another.

And if you never planned on watching it there wouldn't be all the "I'm not gonna watch it because blah liberals blah" Most people I know who don't watch it just ignore it.

Haven’t watch in maybe 15 years or so.

Didn’t even know it was on.

Hollywood blows more than ever. Immoral aholes telling me how to run my life? Eff off.

Oh for the days of Buster Keaton and Harold Llyod. At least they knew how to keep their mouth shuts then.

This guy is a television talk show host. How can he use "we" so much, making himself look like he represents the film industry?

Aren't TV ratings down across the board?

Also, the ratings for the Oscars correlate with the number of blockbusters in the running for best picture. It’s not the host and it’s not some perceived anti-Hollywood bias. It’s a lack of interest because most people haven’t seen a majority of the movies being considered and thus don’t care who wins.
