What do you want to look at? Poverty rates? crime rates? literacy rates? childhood mortality? expected lifespan? These are all quantifiable and have been improving decade after decade.

I mean, the cost of healthcare is through the roof, obesity is an epidemic, mental health issues are out of control, social media is where people get their news, a reality tv star is leader of the free world, kids are shooting up schools, class/race/sex warfare is at an all time high, no one can pay for college, etc, etc, etc... all those things seem pretty bad. Not sure those things are really an improvement decade over decade. But hey, that's just my opinion, SINCE YOU CAN'T QUANTIFY AN OPINION!

Those are good rates, indeed. But those numbers only tell part of the story; there are two kinds of poverty, two kinds of literacy, and so on. Not to mention the population, revived religious fundamentalism, lack of meaningful employment, and drained resources.

I don't believe that to be true. Obviously people born in particular eras share common frames of reference and cultural inputs. Of course there are exceptions. Obviously one's generation isn't his/her sole defining characteristic, but it's an important one.

being from a particular generation can be one of those ways of seeing and ways of not seeing. definitely warps your perspective.....but christ i can't stand so many baby boomers.

I just think its kinda stupid that they say they've been left with some sort of mess. Does anybody they know get cholera? The generations they hate so much have birthed this wonderful postmodern economy where nobody has to do any actual work but they still get to enjoy this society where they want for nothing. Is this really what a MESS looks like?

How are these people going to cope when they tear down this civilization that has taken over 2000 years to create? They expect to just slap their hands together and make everything perfect?

It sucks that tragedy befell them, but that's just the world. People die in shitty, pointless ways all the time. You dont hear the families of MH370 passengers wail about how politicians failed them.

Cholera is certainly down but there's still a lot of dark shit on the horizon with climate change and income inequality. My issue here is that it's unfair to put all the burden of "cleaning this mess" on kids who aren't even out of high school yet. Yes, they're good with dank memes, but they're kids! They can't do shit themselves. People older than they are have to live in and reckon with this world, too, and to say "we're here to clean up your mess" absolves a lot of people of a lot of work that needs to be done.
