faint praise.

In some parts, it is, though. However . . . we got some pretty big motzo balls hanging out there that we're gonna have to deal with.

Wait. What?

Yes, actually

The world is constantly getting better with each and every generation.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/stevedenni ... 32db378268

Yes I am saying this as a millenial

No, you're saying that as a loud-mouth who doesn't know how to think.

That's what you call a cliche. And no, an Internet link ain't gonna un-cliche it.

The world is literally getting better and each generation has played a role in it. Go ahead and deny quantifiable statistics if you wish.

From Forbes. Thorough scholarship there.

If you keep hanging on to your pseudo-intellectualism with the same strength you grip your guns, no one will ever be able to convince you you're wrong. So you got that going for you.

Forbes didn't gather the data, they simply reported data that others had gathered, but no matter what criteria you choose to go by, the world is becoming a better place.

Go ahead actually read the article, I figured someone who is an educator would know how to look at and evaluate data, but I guess I assumed too much

There is literally no quantifiable statistic for this assertion. Getting "better" is an opinion, not a statistic.

What do you want to look at? Poverty rates? crime rates? literacy rates? childhood mortality? expected lifespan? These are all quantifiable and have been improving decade after decade.

Seriously, the world is a better place and to say otherwise is to deny reality.

If you don't like the Forbes link, here is the underlying piece behind the article.

Bad: generational analysis
Good: class analysis

The Boomers are, by and large, a bunch of disrespectful bastards who failed to appreciate the sacrifices their parents made to turn them into a leisure class. And then, in the go-go 80s they were quick to abandon every ideal and principle they ever had in order to buy into the worst consumerist impulses of their parents. Would we really expect the children of these Boomers to be anything but smug and self-centered?

Wouldn't these kids be the children of Gen X?

As a Millennial with Generation X characteristics, I don't know how I feel about being a "previous generation" that needs teenagers to clean up after me. I didn't do anything! I guess I already said how I feel: that generational analysis is astrology for people who aren't flaky girls.

Are you sure all of those things has made the world "better"? I mean, the cost of healthcare is through the roof, obesity is an epidemic, mental health issues are out of control, social media is where people get their news, a reality tv star is leader of the free world, kids are shooting up schools, class/race/sex warfare is at an all time high, no one can pay for college, etc, etc, etc... all those things seem pretty bad. Not sure those things are really an improvement decade over decade. But hey, that's just my opinion, SINCE YOU CAN'T QUANTIFY AN OPINION!

Agree, but JORR is also right above.

Edit--Or right-ish, from a Gen X perspective

Those are good rates, indeed. But those numbers only tell part of the story; there are two kinds of poverty, two kinds of literacy, and so on. Not to mention the population, revived religious fundamentalism, lack of meaningful employment, and drained resources.

I don't believe that to be true. Obviously people born in particular eras share common frames of reference and cultural inputs. Of course there are exceptions. Obviously one's generation isn't his/her sole defining characteristic, but it's an important one.

JORR, you may want to sit down for this one, but for once here, you and I are in near complete agreement.

From the "champagne wishes and caviar dreams" glories to hostile takeover bullshit, it was over populated with folks contributing very little ino.

I just think its kinda stupid that they say they've been left with some sort of mess. Does anybody they know get cholera? The generations they hate so much have birthed this wonderful postmodern economy where nobody has to do any actual work but they still get to enjoy this society where they want for nothing. Is this really what a MESS looks like?

How are these people going to cope when they tear down this civilization that has taken over 2000 years to create? They expect to just slap their hands together and make everything perfect?

It sucks that tragedy befell them, but that's just the world. People die in shitty, pointless ways all the time. You dont hear the families of MH370 passengers wail about how politicians failed them.

They are clearly delighting in the attention. There hasn't been a camera they haven't tried to get in front of.

They feel empowered and they're letting their voices be heard. We normally ignore them.

Cholera is certainly down but there's still a lot of dark shit on the horizon with climate change and income inequality. My issue here is that it's unfair to put all the burden of "cleaning this mess" on kids who aren't even out of high school yet. Yes, they're good with dank memes, but they're kids! They can't do shit themselves. People older than they are have to live in and reckon with this world, too, and to say "we're here to clean up your mess" absolves a lot of people of a lot of work that needs to be done.

Again, this is more class than generation. This wouldn't be playing out as it has if it had been in Grand Island, Nebraska. These kids were born and raised for this.

And why should we paying them so much mind now? Or ever?

Is it because you agree with them? If they were out there marching for better tools for law enforcement to fight crime I doubt you'd be so receptive.

They've made us listen and we probably should do it more often.

Well I actually don't agree with banning guns or making someone wait until 21 to buy a gun when they can go to war at 18. I'm still proud of what they've accomplished so far and what they likely will accomplish.

If he's that puckered about it, perhaps he should consider shooting himself.

WHAT DOES THIS EVEN MEAN. I am so fucking tired of the "listen" cliche. Like forcing us to endure another tearful monologue about Liberal Outrage of the Week is really doing a load of good for the world.

Its the Nas-patented "actually I'm really conservative on the issue" canard. You are happy with anyone and anything being paraded around by the left. If they are on the #resist side you're on their side, whether you actually agree or not.

I'm the same way now. The stakes are too high to be any other way. But at least I'm on the side that wants to protect the civilization that has given us this world that we enjoy.
