As of lunch time today, they were still playing Loop music.

I think this hypocritical Christian shit starts on Friday or Saturday.

Okay what would be your last 5 songs you play on the Loop?

Me
Red Barchetta
The End
Baba O'Rilelly
Streetfighting Man
See a Little Light

Tom Sawyer
The End
Kashmir
Sympathy for the Devil
Number of the Beast

It's going to take a little while to run the ads they've booked for a classic rock station I'd guess

Probably...I'm sure it's not good optics for commercials for Polekatz and The Admiral to show up on the Jesus station...even though you know damn well that most of their target audience goes there, anyway...

As an aside, we drove to and from Florida last week...and I guess I underestimated how many adult book stores and nudie bars are in the middle of the bible belt...

The go off the air Saturday. Well, the Loop does anyway.

They're keeping the call letters too. :(

Which will be as off putting as say the Utah Jazz. (Notice a theme?)

I don't think there will be a proper "last song". The entire staff has been laid off and the station is being run on automation. I don't think there will be anyone around to program anything.

You are correct.

Besides, the only correct answer for last song is Cat Stevens' "Morning Has Broken".

The call letters will probably change in time with an FCC filing.

I remember when Rock 103.5 went off the air they played a montage of Metallica songs finishing with "Sad But True" as the last song after running on automation all weekend after the DJs signed off on a Friday night. But that was a different era.

It would be neat if Cat Stevens was the last song since that was the actual first one played on the Loop in 1977. A lot of people don't know this, but the Loop didn't play harder rock for all 41 years of its run. There are airchecks of even Dahl and Brandmeier playing music in the 80's that one would NOT associate with the black Loop t-shirt.

There was a brief stretch around when AM1000 finally went down for the count where the Loop was playing, like, Natalie Merchant and stuff. I heard the aircheck.

I don't think the Christian Crusaders are going to play a Cat Stevens song.

I remember when 103.5 The Blaze came on for the first time...they played 24 hours straight of Def Leppard's Rock Rock Til You Drop. I am grateful for them introducing me to groups like Dream Theater and Extreme. I also remember the traffic guy they used to have who made every report sound as miserable as possible ("if you're on the Kennedy you're gonna wanna poke your eyes out...")

A computer is running the whole thing. Most of these stations have nobody in the studio overnights and weekends and just run automated the exact same way. If the Christian station was already in control of the station, do you think they would still be spinning rock songs?

(a) It's based on a nearly 100-year old hymn; and,
(b) It's the first song The Loop played when they went on the air
It's as close to a bridge song that works for both formats as there is, plus the tidy bookend factor for The Loop as well.

They really did not switch until WMET went down

WCKG was the "tired-ass classic rock playlist station" in the late '80s and early '90s. Their morning show was the now-incomprehensible team of Big John Howell and ...Stephanie Miller?

105.9?

We could barely get that signal in the NW Burbs....

They must have powered up in later years, because I used to listen to the hot-talk CKG with the old Loop guys when I lived in Lake Geneva, the most northwestern suburb of all.

I was heavy into WCKG from maybe 86-90? The play list was pretty good. Lot of stuff you don't hear anymore. The usual late 60s through 1980 or so.

From reading old articles, the knock on CKG was that its playlist was too conservative compared to the Loop, Q101, and XRT, but a conservative classic rock playlist circa 1992 still probably blows the dying days of the Loop right out of the water, don't you think?

It was good stuff. All the well worn oldies, but a reasonably wide array. Let's say the Stones came out with an album in 1990. WLUP would play a couple of songs from that. WCKG would not. WCKG was not going to play Janie's Got a Gun.

during that era there really were no "personalities" ...Bob Stroud? I can't recall the others. Some woman if I recall. That's how little they mattered.

I remeber Patti Haze being on 'CKG. Sounded like she smoked 3 packs a day.

CKG was primary listen for me from 89-92 probably with some Loop. It came in on my crappy car radio and was fairly consistent on the old radio I had in my room too although on occasion I’d pick up air traffic control from Dupage airport. Which was odd.

The big radio historian over at the Chicago radio board reposted it.It's got "Champagne Supernova," a Sheryl Crow ticket giveaway, "My Best Friend's Girl," "Love My Way," one of those Dave Matthews Band songs that sounds like three or four other ones, "Jeremy," "Every Day Is a Winding Road," "Mysterious Ways," I WON'T BE HELD RESPONSIMBULLLLLL WEEEEE WERE ONLY FRESHMENNNNN, "Right Here, Right Now," and "Smells Like Teen Spirit." So basically the tight-playlist XRT after Norm Winer got fired but 19 years earlier and with a pukey jock.

Sounds like Dahl gets to do one last airshift on the Loop tomorrow. I'll tune in.
