"Thanks to the Loop, for letting me have fun every single day."

Can you imagine Dan Bernstein holding a concert—well, a symposium of some kind?

That gives you a pretty good indication of the popularity of The Loop at the time. A DJ playing parody songs sold out a large outdoor theater.

I never really liked Brandmeier all that much either. It was such a wussy, un edgy show compared to Dahl, Stern and Matthews. Still, vintage Brandmeier would be the best thing on the radio today.

I remember my dad telling me about college days where people would hang out to listen to Wally Phillips and how lame I thought he was. My kids think the same thing now when I mention Dahl. They make me turn off the station when I turn on Stern (can't blame them with his current product).

and to your comment about Bernstein, this Dahl, the biggest name in radio in Chicago having to work a shift on Thanksgiving

It was really great back in my youth to gorge on food then go take a nap listening to great radio before coming back for dessert

Who knew music from between 30 and 50 years ago would steadily lose popularity as time went on?

Maybe we can get the god and guns season 2 on the history channel?

The Loop probably hasn't played that song in over 20 years.

Actually, as the kids are growing up, they are getting into “Dad’s music”, because they are outgrowing the awful pop shit that they had been listening to.

The classic rock format is still thriving in a bunch of markets, but it depends on who is doing the programming. There are actually a lot of good smaller-market stations that have much more variety.

I notice that my 18 y/o son came around over last year or three. That said he never listens to radio. Never. Pitts classic rock station is fine.

My teenage boy loves classic rock. However he also likes 40s music so he isn't exactly mainstream.

Just heard a bumper on the Loop that said something close to "don't worry, The Loop lives on at 101.1 HD2" ... whatever that is.

So, it's only mostly dead.

Yeah, I read they will continue (jockless) on one of the 101.1 HD feeds, and also continue to stream on WLUP.com.

So the Loop is slightly alive?

Those digital subchannels no one's car radios can pick up. What they're really used for these days is to apply for low-powered translators that act as de facto city stations but are only licensed to repeat an existing signal. Since the HD signals technically exist, you can then repeat them over the air. If Cumulus had the money, which they don't, they could get, say, 97.5 in Chicago, which is owned by (as it happens) EMF but LMAed to iHeart, to repeat WKQX-HD2. It's a very weak signal to protect WZOK in Rockford, though: pretty much gets you west of O'Hare and that's it.

is B96 still around? Kids don't listen to that for their pop music these days?

B96 is still around but it's much closer to a mainstream top 40 station than it used to be, whether that was the dance-intensive B96 of the mid-'90s or the go-head-to-head-with-GCI B96 of the late '90s/early 2000s. It still leans more black/Hispanic than Kiss FM does but it's pretty much just rhythmic top 40.
