Thankfully the tariffs are pretty much a toothless publicity stunt. They are still fucking idiotic, but they could've been much worse for our economy.

I think the tariffs don't even tax imports from the places where we actually get our steel, which is good. It's just for show to appease his slack-jawed base.

An excellent distraction for midterms

If Democrats won't join Republicans when the opportunity to stick it to Trump presents itself, they deserve to be where they are, power wise.

Unless I missed something, the only countries exempted (temporarily) from the tariffs are Canada and Mexico. They represent approximately 25% of the imported steel. Trump is demanding concessions from the EU as well as a re-negotiation of NAFTA to exempt our closest allies. The EU has already called the tariffs “stupid” and stated they will respond in kind with “stupid” tariffs on U.S. imports.

Yep. Let’s face it...a tariff is just another word for a tax. It guarantees that prices on affected items will go up. And it’s not just going to be a penny on a can of soup. It’s already affected housing prices when they slapped a tariff on soft woods - which was largely ignored by the general public. The industries Trump is trying to prop up (coal and steel in particular) are not coming back. He needs to stop living in the 80s, despite the era’s great contribution to music.

I stay out of politics for the most part but ag is getting real nervous lately. Corn has managed to get up to 4 bucks a bushel recently for September contracts which is a big plus over earlier in year but NAFTA goes away... I’d hate to see it. And if the steel in the equipment I need goes up..
