And I know the answer is "NO" when it comes to Mitch. Because he doesn't like to get involved as a boss.

But did DeCastro ever say to them, "Hey, guys, we're a sports radio show, stop trying to save the world."

The answer is obviously "No".

That's what makes the SCORE fucked up. DeCastro knew he had a problem and didn't talk to his employees about it

So you fire Goff because of it. And Bernstein has clearly has gotten the message now. But why not talk to them about it as it's happening? Bernstein would have gotten in line like a puppy if his was whipped. As Good Dolphin has said, that Bernstein is all about pleasing his masters to keep his job. Maybe not Goff. I could see him being defiant. But then fine. Fire him after he doesn't obey orders.

You're bosses. Tell your bitches what you want from them!!!!!!

Once again, the SCORE is a weird place.

If B&G saw the Fall books and didn't change their approach on their own, does it seem like a directive from on high would have righted the ship?

Yeah. I do. From Bernstein. Maybe not Goff like I said.

Thats why the crux of BRicks contention that there was a good show hiding in there somewhere if the only had some " direction" from a producer falls flat. They weren't interested in listening to anyone nor programming their content to what people wanted to hear. It was famously " this is our show and we'll do whatever the hell we want if you don't like it don't listen" . So i don't know what " good' show was hiding away in there but they certainly weren't amenable to doing one anyway.

Christ, from what little I've heard from Bernstein after this bomb, he sounds like a whipped puppy. So he can receive a message.

Maybe, maybe not, but Mitch arguably set Goff - the guy he worked so hard to bring back into the CBS/Score family -- up to fail. Radio is like theatre: it's the performers' medium. As the director, you can cast the show and give pages and pages of notes, but once the show begins, it's all in your actors' hands. But that doesn't mean there isn't direction. Some performers require it. Bernstein and Goff certainly do. So when your afternoon guys hemorrhage listeners and sponsors, do you do what very little you can about it, or do you blow smoke up everyone's asses, say "great show, guys!" and run away to your office before anyone can thank you for the compliment? Because it sure feels like that's what Mitch did.

It seems to me Rosen took his cue from Zimmerman. Just don't rock the boat and let things go. Trouble with that approach is when trouble does come up, like the ratings losses after Goff failed addition, you have no process or teeth to make an improvement.

Nothing has ever shown any of these guys what they did/do wrong. A DeCastro explosion was required.

I thought you were going to say in defense of Goff, its hard to do radio when you are high by the middle of every show.

Yes. Bernstein is subservient to management. Goff...ehhh...but he'd realize he has a family to feed and a Range Rover that takes premium fuel.

If you're rewarded for 12 years with "fuck you, don't listen if you don't like it" then you're going to continue unless told otherwise.

I am with BR on that point. Bernsie and Goff are talented and engaging hosts. They just went off the rails. They both love sports and have unique takes. They bring different perspectives and are local guys. They forgot to have fun and keep it light hearted.

They didn't go off the rails. This was their character from day 1. They told you on that first show exactly what they were going to do.

Bernstein has been something of a modern, local pioneer in confrontational radio. Insulting callers with Terry was a powerfully good bit, but it also was offset with good listener-driven material like WYC, Friday Fungs, etc. They were keen to point out a strong call, just as they would verbalize their disgust for suffering fools.

Terry was what made this work. Bernstein is good at calling people on their bullshit, but Terry was quick to remind everybody including Dan "Hey, we're both dopes." He was grounded, silly, and sharp-witted as a host. He exists on some other wacky wavelength that doesn't have time to be so angry about the often redundant sports stories that are the station's diet.

Goff is too similar to Bernstein to play that role. If anything Jason was more snobbish, more keen to shit on callers, more basketball-centric, and brazenly refused to suffer fools. It wasn't fun in the same way that Terry and Dan being dicks was fun. It was...uncomfortable.

It's not to say that the issues they would discuss aren't important, but it made for unfriendly radio. It often felt like we the listeners were ever in on their joke. Terry and Dan would kick dumbasses in the nuts, but they would do it with a wink and a nod to the greater audience who felt like, "yeah we're on the level with B&B." Dan and Jason's chemistry was the complete opposite. They didn't want callers. They didn't want to hear from anyone. It was already well established that everyone in the listening area is a bunch of dumbass white people who are most likely racists and watch stupid sports like hockey and Bears football.

That very well may be CORRECT - but it's bad for business.

When Bernstein is alone though, he doesn't always engage in the confrontational bullshit. I also think he tends to screen for better callers and focus on interviews. I've always said this, I think he would be a decent evening host by himself.

Why would he have to give a warning or suggestions for change? He listened and disliked it and pulled the plug.

I couldn't make it through 30 seconds of the old Bernstein. I'm sure he was convinced that he was sitting pretty for the next decade or so. Talk about your wake-up call.

I noticed at the top when he gives the phone number for texting that he leaves the "and sexting" portion off. Is that him or management?

I assume it's him dropping some of the gimmickry and running a straight open.

Yeah, I get the impression it's a choice to reinvent the show and, to a lesser extent, himself. My fear is it becomes pablum radio, neither hot nor cold. Should he reach that point, he might as well take over for Eric and Kathy.

I believe it is already at that point, but it's not to say it can't become more. In this first week I felt nothing while tuning into B&M. It sounds like two people without an immediate air chemistry, obviously, so in time I do expect the show to season nicely. It needs to stay a show in the first place for that to happen, however, and that may be in question if things get shaken up again too quickly.

I think they should have just gone with “The Dan Bernstein Show” on mid-days. For years (especially pre 2011 or so, B an B made me laugh all the time—but it doesn’t seem to work well with Dan and anyone else, including extended fill-ins in 2016. But he and Terry complemented each other perfectly for awhile

Bernstein is not as snarky when he hosts alone, it could have be guest heavy, less callers, and his niche audience (me included) would tune in. Mid-day slot is perfect for that.

I don’t see the point of pairing him with a vanilla host (McDoingg)that will just echo him anyways
