this seems to be getting lost and giving B and G fans their typical position of perceived intellectual superiority in the discussion of the show changes. It was almost entirely about tone and attitudinal shift towards their consumers.

Not mutually exclusive for me. It was about all that. In total, the show was not fun or entertaining.

it's about making money and perhaps decastro's ego... some combination of the two.

It's difficult to talk about anything for 4 hours a day let alone only sticking to one genre when the world is imploding all around you.

That goes both ways, of course.

Thats BS, good dolphin. Boers and Bernstein told people to piss off for 17 years and it worked.

It worked because of Terry. Terry could talk down to idiot callers without coming off as an elitists....he was a a blue collar(even though white collar by trade) old school dude from the southside.

I'm not speaking for myself here, because I always found Terry Boers detestable, but for the larger listening audience Boers seemed to have a likability factor that Jason Goff- at least in his latest iteration- lacked. Boers tempered bernstein in a way Jason could not or did not.

This is why I couldn't tune in for more then a couple minutes. It was either non stop giggling at things that were not funny or belittling callers to fit the rhetoric of the day.

Couldn't be happier that Goff and Bernstein are not on the air on my way home from work!

That's a fair point by both Bob and JORR. I didn't think of it in that way. Carry on.

Also, for as intelligent a guy as bernstein seems to be, his insistence that his customers were the advertisers and not the listeners is something only a simpleton could believe. The only reason advertisers pay to be on your show is because you attract listeners.

I never had the amount of distain for Boers that I did for Goff. I never liked Bernstein since he was the Bears reporter. Never understood his appeal.

At one point Jason chimed in enough on B&b that it was virtually a three-man booth. Sometimes you had drinky popping in as well and the show had a very loose goofy feel. Jason was pretty much universally beloved at that time.

Jason is fairly entertaining as a complementary voice in a three-man show. As the dominant voice in a two-man show--which he became during his pairing with Bernstein--he is unbearable.

So you agree with me? Because it looks like you agree with me that it was tone and attitude rather than content.

when he did chime in it was almost universally to correct or chide Bernstein rather than agree with him

just as an example, how many times did we hear a caller in complete alignment with one of Dan's political thoughts expecting to receive praise only for Dan to turn it on the caller and still treat the person as a fool

Even those who agreed with them were treated with disdain. It started with openly stating they hated Bears Mondays and eventually devolved into hating any listener who made a call.

I think it worked because, by and large, The Listener felt like they were in on the joke of making fun of meatballs and bad callers. Even if The Listener at some level of resolution was, in fact, a meatball, B&B weren't necessarily making fun of them. I think B&G combined to create the atmosphere around the show that instead of being in on the joke, The Listener was now the butt of it.

Also, the above approach applied to hot-button political issues of a certain bent pushed a lot of people away.

Yep, on Bears Monday and then any day he was in one of his bitchy moods. He did this to someone a few days after the Sox won it all. The caller said something about wanting to share his joy with his family, and Bernstein gave him a cold "So?"

The show definitely used to be more fun, but he was still a bitch much of the time and Terry didn't do shit about it.

I'm shocked how quickly it has become apparent that Bernstein is nothing without Boers. He'll be off the air in two years.

A dabbling of politics is fine but we don't need two hours of radio dedicated to telling us how bad Larry Nassar is.

A great point. At some point, it transitioned from B&B + Callers vs random idiot to B&G vs all random idiot callers. I feel it started to fade to that even before it was officially B&G...sort of during the last days of Terry.

Nothing makes Dan angrier then when a caller opens with, "In my opinion". He has made it clear he does not want your opinion on anything.

Yes, when Dan fully asserted himself after realizing Terry wasn't coming back for the Fun, Bad, Gay, Weird days of the show, he seems to have felt the need to set the foundation for the next chapter of his career, and settled squarely on Very. Serious. Woke. Radio.

Mitch allowing Terry to patch in his portion of the show via ISDN allowed Dan to exert his influence on the show more regularly, which set the stage for Penn State. After that success, Dan's transition was a fait accompli, with Terry's illness just hastening the arrival of what we ultimately saw in the B&G Bernstein.

Is the first B and G show available anywhere. I am fairly certain they defined what they were going to be to the listeners in that very first show

The toughest mountain to climb with the fanboys who are pissy that after "stick to sports" Mac talks about gambling for 15 seconds is trying to get them to see the difference. The 90 seconds Parkins spent on his newphew walking out would have been the entire 2:00 hour with a full recap at 5:30 if it was one of Dan's kids. THAT'S what Jimmy D meant by stick to sports. Say your little piece and then get back to why we're here.

Bernstein is an awful listen and has been since he was a Score reporter. "Dan Bernstein on the SCORE!!!!!"

I listened for a while today and caught their MSU rant. While timely, this is exactly the kind of thing that lost Dan his drive-time gig. It was bad radio and his partner is as vanilla as it gets.

Yep. All of these events just show how good Terry was. He was a huge part of two of the greatest radio shows in Chicago Sports history.
