Yup, the robot was so determined to taste blood that the human couldn't even prevent this senseless slaughter.

Yup.

Tragedy in Arizona today, as a woman was run down by a self driving car at the senseless age of 49.

I guess America is upset as he'll lose his one possibility for income should he return.

If we just ban women from driving we will achieve the same result.

http://www.dorkly.com/post/83351/a-pixar-director-just-confirmed-a-dark-cars-fan-theory

Quote:
Cars is the most lucrative Pixar franchise that everyone seems to hate. On the surface, it's just a fun world filled with vehicles that talk like Owen Wilson and Tony Shalhoub. But the moment you start to pick apart the particulars, the series suddenly becomes a pitch-black tale of technology gone wrong.

The most burning question: Where are all the humans? The world seems to be our Earth, since landmarks like London's Big Ben are present and an American flag can be seen at one point. Conspiracy theorists have speculated that Cars is set in a universe where vehicles overthrew mankind, that there was an uprising and no humans were spared. The really scary part? A bigwig at Pixar just confirmed that exact scenario occurred.

In a fantastic article for ScreenCrush, writer Matt Signer chatted with Pixar's Jay Ward, the creative director of the Cars franchise. When I say Ward wrote the book on Cars, I mean he literally wrote an internal document for Pixar establishing the rules of the characters in the Cars universe.

When asked about the the fate of humanity in a world where automobiles are the dominant lifeform, Ward said this:

If you think about this, we have autonomous car technology coming in right now. It's getting to the point where you can sit back in the car and it drives itself. Imagine in the near-future when the cars keep getting smarter and smarter and after one day they just go, "Why do we need human beings anymore? They're just slowing us down. It's just extra weight, let's get rid of them."

Holy. Shit. The guy in charge of the Cars movies just acknowledged that prior to the events of the series, a massive uprising took place that resulted in the murder of every single human on the planet. If the movies were honest, they'd start with a prologue where killbot cars roll over piles of human skulls like the beginning of Terminator 2.

Now to be fair, Pixar itself isn't endorsing this theory -- only Jay Ward. But he's still the guy in charge of everything to do with Cars, so it's not like there's any higher authority that could speak on the subject.

The ScreenCrush article also has some other juicy and/or disturbing tidbits concerning the Cars canon. Like, why does a sentient pickup truck sound like a redneck?

Well, Ward explains that too:

But the car takes on the personality of the last person who drove it. Whoa. There you go.

So not only did vehicles destroy humanity, they also replaced it; millions, maybe billions of cars all over the globe absorbed the traits and quirks of people who would soon die in the carpocalypse.

Even if we move past the creepy soul-sucking nature of the cute cast of characters, there's always the question of biology. If the Cars' eyes are the windshield and the mouth is the bumper, where's everything else?

Ward clarified this as well, but his explanation of the rules only brought up more questions.

"You'll never see the doors open," Ward said. "Because the brain and the eyes are in there, we don't want anything falling out of the side."

There are some things that we weren't meant to contemplate. And one of those things is the internal organs of a cartoon car unfurling out of an open passenger side door.

I had no idea self driving Uber cars were here. Heard they started in Pittsburgh a while back. Guess they’ve branched out. There are so many Waymo (formerly Google) cars here in Tempe and other burbs. I’ll spot 2 or 3 every time I go out.

Maybe the car feared for it's life. Did anyone consider this before rushing to judgment.

There about infinity times more human drivers than robot drivers on the roads today.

sure but "robot" drivers have been around a few years and this is its first US fatality. i'm just saying...reeeelaaaax

The future of self-driving cars was already covered on Total Recall.

We have data at this point to empirically prove that driverless cars are safer. You can choose to be a Luddite if you would like, but these cars are the future.

Traffic flow and travel times will both increase when we get more of these on the road as they handle merging far better than human drivers (which is one of the biggest contributors to traffic buildups on expressways)

Is this your stock portfolio talking? You’re gonna need that AR-15 more than ever when so many people are unable to find gainful employment. Things are bleak as it is.

Yes, they’ve driven millions of safe miles. In circles. In remote areas out west.

the video is really bad. There is no excuse for this. the car should have seen the woman. there were Lidar sensors on this car, the night time shouldnt have mattered. the car had all day long to identify the object... i can understand the cameras not seeing her, but the lasers and radar should have EASILY picked her up and applied the brakes WELL before any accident.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywydalBYhic

This is absolutely horrible for self driving technology. That said though, a human wouldn't have seen her... so her best chance was this senario. I think it obviously was her time to die.

they are focusing on areas with good weather. they admit the technology can't handle snow.

It would seem to me that if this was a normal car that did the same thing that the driver would not be at fault and the bike rider would be.

I saw the video, This lady was dumb as fuck.. If the self driving car didn't get her the driver behind would have. Dark as hell and this dummy tries to walk a bike across a major roadway.

Yeah sure the car should have stopped but how did that pedestrian just walk in front of traffic? Wouldn't a normal person wait for traffic to clear before walking across? The ped looked wasted or something.

what worries me is the car didn't stop! i understand the lady shouldnt have been walking in the road. but she was, and the car had PLENTY of time and clear line of sight to see her. The night does not matter with these cars! they have multiple sensors making hundreds of calculations every single second. There was at least 3 seconds to identify the jaywalker (you cant see her at first, but the car's radar and lidar should have). there is NO excuse for this! very, very damning for Uber's technology. They are nowhere close to prime time. I think they are clearly years behind other companies...

I wonder if these newer cars with anti front end collision sensors would have stopped in time. Going 40 mph and slamming the brakes on dry pavement will still skid for 60 feet or so.
