You're right.

But the "tone and attitude" that you talk about were tied into the "Social Issues"

The "Fuck you" radio was always done by B&B. But Boers never jumped in at the end. He let Bernstein handle it. Goff jumped in with "Fuck you" radio that, if Bernstein were honest, even shocked him.

I have no problem with Goff saying Kapernick is being black balled because he's black with a stance. That's fine. And I agree. And I also agree that rape and racism is bad. Like most people who aren't dumb asses.

But Goff took it further. If a caller disagreed with him with a stupid sports argument, Goff would make it about black and white. "Why do you hate me? There has to be some reason? We know what it is. C'mon, just admit it" Insinuating racism. The white dude just disagreed with Goff and he took it there. That was the problem.

Goff will never see it this way. He'll always be convinced that the evil white man fired him.

Thats BS, good dolphin. Boers and Bernstein told people to piss off for 17 years and it worked.

I think it worked because, by and large, The Listener felt like they were in on the joke of making fun of meatballs and bad callers. Even if The Listener at some level of resolution was, in fact, a meatball, B&B weren't necessarily making fun of them. I think B&G combined to create the atmosphere around the show that instead of being in on the joke, The Listener was now the butt of it.

Also, the above approach applied to hot-button political issues of a certain bent pushed a lot of people away.

This is a great point. Age also allowed Uncle Terry to talk in a way a young Goff couldn't. Plus his delivery was better.

Terry was a total dickbag most of the time but when he was goofy he was hilarious. He absolutely tempered the Bernstein element of the show. The PC police neutered Terry and it became serious radio. For me, when they lost so many of the funny drops and then WYC while Terry phoned it in the long slow slide into shitsville began.
This thing with Bernsie and McKnight wont make it to 2019. I pray.

What's funny is that for someone as (quite) naturally articulate and knowledgeable as Bernstine, the only impediment to his success was the temptation to be a douche virtually all the time, and he couldn't resist. Sports radio is not exactly populated by geniuses. I don't doubt that MANY people on this board could do it reasonably well. In fact I, among others, thought JORR would be a perfect partner and antidote, particularly in baseball season and especially if it's true that he has a classic Chicago accent which I vaguely remember reading. That's more true than ever given Trump's election. Can you imagine Danny being forced to sit across the table from a True Blue Trump Believer for 5 hours every day? Someone with the relentless drive to cast him Victim-in-Chief. Someone who honestly equates Infowars with the New York Times. Someone who cries tears of rage at the mere mention of the dossier. Someone who has adopted the financial interests of Trump's beautiful children as his own. It'd be the best radio in history. The best, Jerry; the best.

just as an example, how many times did we hear a caller in complete alignment with one of Dan's political thoughts expecting to receive praise only for Dan to turn it on the caller and still treat the person as a fool

Even those who agreed with them were treated with disdain. It started with openly stating they hated Bears Mondays and eventually devolved into hating any listener who made a call.

Yep, on Bears Monday and then any day he was in one of his bitchy moods. He did this to someone a few days after the Sox won it all. The caller said something about wanting to share his joy with his family, and Bernstein gave him a cold "So?"

The show definitely used to be more fun, but he was still a bitch much of the time and Terry didn't do shit about it.

bears mondays used to always start off with a caller named bob, right?

also my other favorite bears monday was "kiss our ass monday" in 2005 when rex grossman came back to relieve kyle orton and lead the bears to a win over the falcons, leading to b&b declaring the next day's show to be "kiss our ass monday" and yeah, i'm sure a caller named bob got in on it.
