what worries me is the car didn't stop! i understand the lady shouldnt have been walking in the road. but she was, and the car had PLENTY of time and clear line of sight to see her. The night does not matter with these cars! they have multiple sensors making hundreds of calculations every single second. There was at least 3 seconds to identify the jaywalker (you cant see her at first, but the car's radar and lidar should have). there is NO excuse for this! very, very damning for Uber's technology. They are nowhere close to prime time. I think they are clearly years behind other companies...

I wonder if these newer cars with anti front end collision sensors would have stopped in time. Going 40 mph and slamming the brakes on dry pavement will still skid for 60 feet or so.

it won't skid at all. anti lock brakes. the distance to full stop from 40mph on dry pavement is like 30ft.. maybe less. these new cars will stop on a fucking dime.

whats scary is this car HAD the front end collision sensors. those are just one of many sensors in a self driving car. again, there is NO excuse for this. Signs are directly pointing at Uber's business culture once again. They MUST have cut a corner somewhere (or many).

This is the first time a self driving car totally fucked up. Any other time so far there have been odd circumstances. This was not. This was 100% fail/error in software or hardware. This should not have happened.

This one is 100% on the woman crossing the street. No human behind the wheel would've been able to prevent it either. She was looking to win a Darwin Award and just earned her nomination.

We should also note that with millions of miles driven, Google's self driving cars have only been in 1 accident in which the self driving car was deemed at fault. I don't think Uber has had one even at this point where they were deemed at fault (as they aren't here).

In the end self driving cars will allow for much higher speeds of travel, eliminate gapers delays, and also will eliminate the slow downs that come with highway merging (which causes most of Chicago's traffic)

Video is out. Walking your bike across a busy road in pitch black with no light, reflector, blinker, or safety apparatus of any kind? Asking for this shit.

She also didn't even appear to be looking in the direction of traffic at all. How do you walk into any road, let alone a multi-lane road without doing so?

The video is really bad for the car. Any person with decent night vision can see a person in the dark once their eyes adjust. The LIDAR or whatever just missed her completely.

You would've run her down and then taken her phone off of her dead body to request a ride which you would then cancel.

lidar didn't miss her. if it did, that means radar simultaneously missed her too.

this wasnt a hardware problem. Uber done fucked up on how they wrote their software. it's clear. this should never happened. i understand the lady was jaywalking. thats not the problem because the technology is FAR capable enough to see her and stop in time. the fact that it didn't is inexcusable.

She didnt hop out from behind anything. She was walking her bike across the street without looking. With a human driver this scenario ends with somebody probably slamming their horn at this women while using the other side of the road to get around her. Robot fucked up big time.

We have data at this point to empirically prove that driverless cars are safer. You can choose to be a Luddite if you would like, but these cars are the future.

Traffic flow and travel times will both increase when we get more of these on the road as they handle merging far better than human drivers (which is one of the biggest contributors to traffic buildups on expressways)

I guess America is upset as he'll lose his one possibility for income should he return.

Is this your stock portfolio talking? You’re gonna need that AR-15 more than ever when so many people are unable to find gainful employment. Things are bleak as it is.

Yes, they’ve driven millions of safe miles. In circles. In remote areas out west.

Gotta go with Whiskey on this one. There is approx 1 fatality for every 100 million miles that Americans drive. Since Americans drive 3 trillion miles a year, that results in 30,000 deaths.

Self-driving cars have logged about 6 million miles and now have one fatality....much worse than humans at this point.

Zero fatalities that are attributable to the self driving car. This one is 100% on the dumbass jaywalker.

Of course. That's why it isn't everywhere right now.

No. The car did not work right. You cant judge it based on what a human would do, because the car is 1000 times more capable at preventing this accident than a human is. It failed. It did not do anything... that is absolutely frightening. I don't think anyone is going to consider Uber a safe ride after this. The full report is going to reveal Uber is a shit company and theyre gonna go away. Put your stock in Lyft boi

The only way Ogie could defend this car more is if it had a star of david as a hood ornament.

Neither car nor human could prevent this accident, the person entered the car's path literally a second before impact.

You can go ahead and defend the record of human drivers all you want. They only kill ~35,000-40,000 people per year in this country (and increasing steadily as distracted driving has become more commonplace). Physically are cars are always getting safer. Sadly our drivers are becoming less safe at the same time.

wrong wrong wrong. any decent auto drive car would have EASILY stopped in time. easily. not even a challenge due to the fact that conditions were perfect. no glaring sun, no driving snow, no rain. nothing. there was NO reason for this.

uber is in deep shit

So Uber’s software disables the emergency brake system when it’s in self-driving mode.

Such an illustrative case of how journalists who ultimately know nothing act as unnecessary middlemen for information.
