What’s in a name: Gender-neutral baby names are on the rise

Quote:
“We chose a gender-neutral name, Riley, for my daughter,” said Lori Kinkler, a psychologist in San Antonio, Texas. “We knew her sex, but gender is fluid and yet to be determined. Of all the difficulties faced by those who live beyond, or across, the binary, we didn’t want name-changing to be one of them. ... I like that she feels she has options and knows she’ll be accepted by us no matter what.” Riley is 3.

Fuck you.

Quote:
Kirsten Hammann, 45, in the San Francisco Bay area, and her husband named their daughters Teagan and Sigrid. She considers both names gender neutral.

You as well.

Quote:
“We named our baby Avery Morgann. The intention was to give them more room to define themselves as they get older. Also, name changes are expensive and frustrating,” said Portland, Oregon, parent C.J. Alicandro, who strives for gender neutrality in all ways for the 2 1/2-year-old

“We wanted to set up Avery with an opportunity to not be limited as much as possible by a name and be able to choose an identity as much as possible, given the confines that are forced upon them,” said Alicandro, a 31-year-old social worker.

And fuck you too.

If we say "gender is fluid" enough it still won't make it true.

Gender is not fluid, for Christ sake. I’d be really impressed if someone here could just grow a vagina.

I find gender neutral names to be a pain, as many parent do. You tell people about your kids, and they wonder if it is a boy or a girl.

Maybe I'm a little biased on this one, but Avery is not a gender neutral name.

I don't really have an issue with those specific names. It's more their justification.

It was always a boy's name when I grew up. I think it got hijacked by annoying parents who now name their daughters it.

Exactly.

I don't care if they name the kid "Zebra-Shit McMillen Flowerpot" ... it's the justification, as you say, that's going on behind it that is straight-up insanity.

but SHE considers them neutral. It's not what you think or how they are defined in their native language.

I liked the world better when everyone was named after Bible figures and/or mafiosa-Italians.

People have been naming their children stupid bullshit for as long as man has been fucking.

Riley has that dual annoyance of being both gender neutral and a traditional surname popular with people who will eventually send their kids to Hardy Prep, St. Clement's or Francis Xavier Ward.

Kirsten should be worried about always being called Kristen. My first boss at this place was named Kirsten, but we called her Anne. I asked why, and that is how she explained it.

When I worked at the BMV, I saw a guy named Thomas T Thomas III. I never bothered to look up what the middle name was but I always hoped it was Thomas.
