Just listened to a song called The W.A.N.D. by the Flaming Lips... where has this band been all my life. I remember "She Don't Use Jelly" and that more recent one, but I never picked up an album... now I have to.

Others on my list of all time alt favs:
Stone Roses
Dinosaur Jr.
Fugazi
Buffalo Tom
The Pixies
Ministry
Old Smashing Pumpkins
Jane's Addiction
and Primus, of course

oh, and the album that has WAND is very good too (At war with the mystics),
I play them both before class at times during the semester.

Despite overplaying of She Don't Use Jelly, Transmissions is where it's at.

Here you go:

1) Transmissions From the Satellite Heart
2) Clouds Taste Metallic
3) Hit To Death In the Future Head
4) Soft Bulletin

I would recommend these 4 first. If you feel you're still not satisfied, I would proceed with heavy caution to their early output and would avoid their recent output at all costs

No love for Yoshimi? Soft Bulletin is pretty solid, especially What is the Light?

Yeah, I agree about Soft Bulletin. The 4 I listed are what I would consider their holy trinity+1. All outstanding albums

No, I have no love for Yoshimi. I don't doubt others do but I don't really like the direction they went in, as in more electronic sounding and less rock. I think they kind of became caricatures of themselves, too concerned with being 'weird' and all that. There's one or two things I like on Yoshimi but I never listen to it at all

The Bad Days EP is pretty good too

I placed an amazon order for Transmissions, Yoshimi, and At War with the Mystics. That should get me started reaaaaal nice.

Back in college... I could only afford one CD at a time. Now, I rarely find a band I like, so I jump in head first.

The Soft Bulletin is one of my favorite albums ever.

"Sleeping On The Roof" is so fucking beautiful I could cry.

consider it bought if I like the others. I'll be honest with you... I'm 34 with 4 kids and my music discovery days are almost dead it seems. No time to go to a small venue to see a new band. All I have is my commute. I've listened to some of the new alt rock on Sirius (Left of Center and Sirius Alternative), but I feel like I'm 100 years old saying this stuff all sounds the same. Every now and then I discover something really original. It keeps me going. But I can't help feeling old... am I the same FUCKING guy who went mud sliding with Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell at the 93 Lollapalooza tour?!?

Welcome to the club. They're a great band to enjoy at a later "stage" (as I can attest).

Also, as Stinkfinger said, I wouldn't stop before you try The Soft Bulletin.

I'm under a rock... not under the ground. Hear d Matisyahu a bunch. Good stuff... mostly just King without a Crown. Reggae is fun to me, but loses its thrill after awhile.

I think he was possibly ripping me for calling Matisyahu original, although Im not sure why. I dont know too many rabbis that are great raggae musicians.

Once you get past the fact that yes, he is indeed a Hasidic Jewish rabbi, there is nothing inherently unique or original about his actual music.

The song "Reggaejunkiejew" by Ween recorded in 1992 is far better than the real life version in this decade that is Matisyahu.

Matzofarian.

I'm having a hard time believing that the first time you heard "King Without a Crown" that you didn't think it was some pretty great reggae... at least better than I've heard over the past decade.

I find that to be a contradiction in terms.

I would say it's best in small doses. I like Gregory Isaacs, the cool ruler, and a few others but I can only listen to it once in a great while

Which makes your opinion pretty null in this case.

I'm a hockey fan- I'm used to constantly being told my opinion doesn't matter. But if you think that's going to stop me from having one and voicing it, then you're painfully mistaken.
