Roseanne took place in Sycamore, the "shithole" that I went to high school in. The local newspaper was shown in their kitchen all of the time.

I think they were supposed to be emblematic of the lower working class in middle America.

As to their specific location, I didn't know it was Sycamore, as referenced above. I just remember them referencing Lanford as being close to Elgin. Whenever they went to the "city", it was Elgin.

I think Lanford was out in the Sycamore area. I think it was some combination of Rockford and the areas surrounding. I know in one episode Dan mentions going to Dekalb.

I remember watching it with my parents every week, back when you actually had to plan your evening around any shows you liked watching, or try to set a grainy VHS tape that had been recorded over 100 times.

The way we watch "tv" now and cell phones are the two biggest "back in my day" conversations I have with my kids.

The dialogue is laying the exposition on thick, and some of these jokes are painfully on the nose, but it's nice to see everyone back together.
