I was in a Starbucks this afternoon, and a couple high school-aged girls were at the nearest table. I overheard their conversation, and they were brutal. It was straight out of Mean Girls, just ripping the hell out of their friends and classmates.

Is this what I have to look forward to? Is it inevitable? Should I get rid of her when she's 12?

It's all about the kind of coffee you raise her on. You don't hear that type of conversation at Dunkin' Donuts.

That's not as good as my story.

I got on the Purple Line at Dempster yesterday and four young black dudes from Loyola Academy were in my car. One was an outgoing knucklehead doing most of the talking. One was very serious and reading Just Mercy. The big mouth complained because he didn't buy his copy of the book on time and missed the first two assignments and was getting a C in the class. Mr. Serious asked his friends for a pen and Mr. Bigmouth started yelling, "You gonna annotate that shit? My copy came pre-annotated!" Serious asked how that was gonna help him learn the material. I had to jump in and I asked Bigmouth why he didn't just buy the Cliff's Notes. The other three laughed their asses off.

Then they started talking about Spring Formal. Bigmouth claimed he was gonna go in shorts. Serious said to Bigmouth, "You cost us free pizza for the rest of our lives! You could have gone with that girl whose dad owns that pizza chain!" Bigmouth said, "I'm not into her." Serious said, "You didn't have to marry her. Sometimes you have to take one for the team."

Look, you can all stop PM'ing me. I can't force him to put a lock on the medicine cabinet; I can only nag him afterward.

I think the cruelest years for girls are the middle school ages of 11-13.

Saw them pulling some shameful stuff when my daughter was growing up back in the day.

It was before Facebook so MySpace was the vehicle of major nastiness.

Good luck, leash.

We had really hoped sending our daughter to a small, parochial school would limit the meanness, but it may have intensified it. Our daughter ended up with eating issues, partly because of the treatment. Going away to college has been great for her, a whole bunch of new friends to make. A couple of her classmates are at the same college, also small and parochial, but big enough to avoid them. The boys were so much easier.

As far as JORR stories go that one is pretty underwhelming

Hey there's always a chance that JLN and LTG pop up and continue their eternal enmity for the ages...

Lewis Black's version is much funnier than this one.

Small schools often worse it seams. Remember that well from my junior high and high school years. The girls were viscious.

My daughter is 11. It seems 50/50. Half are already completely bitchy. Other half still youngish and very sweet.

Our 2 softball teams are made up from a few towns. Most are from one school. A girl from another school showed up. She said, Hi, I'm Jade. Then started the drill

5 mins later two of the bitchy ones said she "seems fake and they hope she's not on the team". My daughter, the saint, scolded them and said you can't tell someone's fake from then saying hello. Don't be bitches already.

I was proud.

Yeah, we're going to preach to our child to be open-minded and non-judgmental, but it will probably fall on deaf ears when she sees us making fun of people all the time.

And to punt beagles across parking lots.
