A friend of mine's kid got a perfect SAT score and he's been turned down by several of his top choices. I'm not even sure what it takes to get into a top school anymore. His counselor told him not to even bother applying to any Ivys. I guess because his grade point average isn't quite up to par.

Here he is recently complaining about getting rejected from four California colleges.

Hogg — who reportedly has an SAT score of 1270 and a GPA of 4.2 — admitted that he’d been rejected by all four University of California campuses to which he’d submitted college admissions applications.

Can we talk about how maxing out extracurriculars and holding down a 4+ GPA on the AP track of Florida's New Trier, all while being famous for advocacy, still isn't enough to get into UCLA?

I would like to know what scam Florida is running that lets a kid "earn" a 4.2 but only hits a 1270 on the SAT?

Can’t believe UCal Berkeley wouldn’t welcome this little grandstanding turd with open arms .

Honors and AP classes are given higher weight. Typically honors are given something like a 5 and AP a 6.

He wants to become a journalist. I honestly question the intelligence of anyone who wants to go out of state and spend ~$130-150,000 to get a degree in a field where just about all of the major players are downsizing and firing their staff. Those who find employment make very little. Just ask all of the people who left Tribune Tower a few weeks ago how great the journalism field is. Clearly there is some critical thinking skills missing in this thought process he has. He's about as dumb as the people who respond to ads for the Illinois Broadcast School on 670.

I don't know how Stoneman Douglas calculates GPAs, but at my high school, honors/APs were worth an extra .5 up to four times, so the best you could do was 4.286 by acing seven classes with four honors points but not acing an eighth course, which lowered your GPA from a study hall (this Brane Genious math is why Badger could never lead a movement). But if they do 5.0 for APs as some schools do, then I guess 4.2 isn't that impressive at a school where everyone's academically redlining all the time.

Quote:
“It’s not been too great for me and some of the other members in the movement,” Hogg told Levin. “We got rejected from … UCLA, and UCSD, so it’s been kind of annoying having to deal with that, and everything else that’s been going on, but at this point, it’s, you know, we’re changing the world.”

Such an entitled little shit stain.

Quote:
“I’m not surprised at all, in all honesty,” Hogg answered. “I think there’s a lot of amazing people who don’t get into college, not only that do things like I do, but because their voices just aren’t heard in the tsunami that apply every year to colleges, in such an economic, in such an impacted school system that we have in America where people have to go into massive amounts of debt just to go to college and get an education.”

You can add college tuition as another issue he is tackling.

Quote:
“It is, it is absolutely disappointing,” he answered. “But at this point, we’re already changing the world. If colleges want to support us in that, great. If they don’t, it doesn’t matter. We’re still going to change the world.”

Did he mention he's changing the world?

this isn't surprising out of a HS senior. i thought i was doing real important things as well. This is all on anyone who slaps this kid on tv and and exploits him as a political shield's fault. hogg who's face is just 100% smarm and that kushev kid who looks all sunken eyed and weird.

1270 still a mid 80s percentile these days?

Jounalism is a noble profession and holds government to account. When done right, it brings the world to us. And honestly, college is expensive for every profession requiring a degree. There are cheaper ways to do it, but I don’t blame folks for wanting to go those expensive universities.

Yes 82-88 percentile for 1,250-1,300.

No, not here. I responded separately. I think you and I agree on the merits and importance of media.

Nah, just an observation that he should look at the state of the field he wishes to enter and ask himself if it is worth spending 6 figures to get there when he can probably get the same degree from a community college for a fraction of the price.

If you're going to be a doctor, nurse in a specialty field, pharmacist, engineer, etc. then spend the money to go out of state as you'll make it back. If you're going to be a journalist, then invest as little as possible into the cost of your schooling. He has had an internship already at his local paper so his school choice probably won't threaten his ability to return there at summers and continue his internship with an in to get hired when the degree is complete. Thus spending the extra money for the same degree is a poor financial decision for someone like him.

Heck, you don't even need a degree to become a journalist. Just ask Andrew Kaczynski, who I am pretty certain dropped out.

Honestly parents need to step in and not be afraid to tell their teens "NO"when it comes to going out of state or to tiny liberal arts schools. Kids don't understand basic concepts such as ROI.

Journalists are like teachers (in many cases) in that they aren’t in it for the ROI. They are called to a field that gives back much more to society than they take from it. They are not the greedy capitalist dollar seekers like me....

I've mentioned this before, but in my wife's time her school didn't offer additional points for the AP classes and she was in a lot of them. She got straight A's with the exception of a single B. A guy in the remedial program got straight A's and was valedictorian. Insult to injury, one of the guy's buddies also got straight A's and was salutatorian. So my wife didn't even get to sit on the stage. She's still butthurt about it over 30 years later.

Well, Ogie seems to know what's best for everybody. If only we had a good five-year plan, the rich book kid would be put to proper work under penalty of downloaded gun.

If he wants to be a journalist, why go to college? Just start a podcast with JDC!

Anyway, this is all moot, as one media organization or another will make sure he is exquisitely taken care of. Our sweet scowling superstar isn't gonna slum it at Broward Community College.

He'll be taken care of, but had the events of the last month and a half not occurred, he would be setting himself up for a very poor financial situation for his 20s and 30s with no one to blame but himself.

Great journalism should be applauded and encouraged. The cost of college is sick. But I am not going to start lamenting the sad state of our entire educational system, while there is such a big fool in the White House. Too many problems and yet life goes on.

It's easy for schools to keep raising tuition so long as the Federal Government continues to guarantee student loans which have no prayer of ever being paid back. This gives schools no incentive to keep costs in check as lenders will continue to issue debt with no underwriting.

More schools need to follow the example set by Mitch Daniels at Purdue (Boiler Up!)

https://www.purdue.edu/purduemoves/init ... reeze.html

I just wish he was the President when I was there as my tuition went up annually, but then again I also still paid off all of my loans years ahead of time.

I assume you responded to Ogie so I will add this...

There is in fact added value to a journalism degree in the name of the school. It directly impacts job opportunity and earning power.

I would like to know what scam Florida is running that lets a kid "earn" a 4.2 but only hits a 1270 on the SAT?

I don't know how Stoneman Douglas calculates GPAs, but at my high school, honors/APs were worth an extra .5 up to four times, so the best you could do was 4.286 by acing seven classes with four honors points but not acing an eighth course, which lowered your GPA from a study hall (this Brane Genious math is why Badger could never lead a movement). But if they do 5.0 for APs as some schools do, then I guess 4.2 isn't that impressive at a school where everyone's academically redlining all the time.

Yeah, my school didn’t inflate gpa that way either. Not was there any such thing as an A+ to give a 4.3 They would slide in an explanation of this in with college applications. This often led to the valedictorian and salutatorian being students who took the easy way or were behind others.

She is someone who is completely ignorant as to why her grandparents or great-grandparents left their homeland (Cuba).

My school didn't even have a Valedictorian because how dare we welcome competition and invite hurt feelings... Yes I'm a millennial.

Competition for valedictorian drives kids mad over crap that doesn't end up mattering. I imagine it's not about avoiding hurt feelings as much as it's about eliminating the corner-cutting and cheating that attend maintaining perfect grades while doing every extracurricular possible, and perhaps most of all, lobbying teachers to round up their grades from 92.49 to 92.5 to 93 and therefore A over A- because their lives will end otherwise. God, was that tiresome.

Where did you go to high school? I went to a high school in Lake Geneva with holes in the roof but also a valedictorian. I'd have preferred the other way around.
