Is this what Twitter does to people: Take otherwise normal people and, with the infusion of a little bit of immediate "fame", turn them into raging narcissists that will do anything to maintain or attain more "fame", or does it tap in to raging narcissism already present in their personality?

Falls along the lines of the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory with the lack of anonymity in this case.

When we talk about "Twitter," we're really talking about media creatures who require constant validation, so I'd lean more toward the latter.

One of the stranger things to behold is a bunch of power-users chattering with one another, and because they're journalists usually doing a very original "big if true" or "can you believe this website is free" riff, and then seeing someone who isn't one of them try to get in on the riff and be totally ignored: no replies, no retweets, no likes. Twitter has finally gotten around to segregating those as "see more replies" so that even the lurkers can be just as untrammeled by uncool people as the cool people are. It's like high school. All this shit is high school. Whenever you find yourself baffled by weird or maladaptive behavior among journalists or media people on the internet, remember that it's all high school.

The worst thing Twitter has done for media is that it has removed the filter of an editor. Before Twitter, pretty much everything went through editor. Those days are gone and with them are the days where you could trust the media for accuracy.
