Seriously though, no you can't lock someone up for what they might do.

This isn't that shitty Tom Cruise movie yet.

So why does it get mentioned all the time when we talk about mass shootings or women who suck at mass shootings?

On second thought, I’m in favor of it.

Cry more. You can't have your side scream this is a mental health issue and then get pissy when you give a hard no to locking people with mental health concerns up. Pick a lane or shut the fuck up. It's really simple.

we have as a society determined that locking them up in asylums wasn't good for anyone. it almost seems like we haven't yet figured out a fool proof way of assimilating them into our society. we look at the parkland kid, this youtube lady and go BUT LOOK AT THE SIGNS! yeah so, what is the authorities supposed to do? play minority report?

Mental health needs resolution through cultural means. There are certainly cases of the mentally disturbed who are true psychopaths or dangerous individuals who need proper isolation from society, but blanket-jailing for mental health is obviously reckless.

Society needs to promote and embrace acceptance for pursuing therapy, medication, and/or communicating with those important in your lives how you're feeling.

Locked up for being dangerous without doing anything illegal yet? Can't do it. Prior restraint.
In Illinois we have a law that was added to a piece of current legislation which I won't mention for obvious reasons that allows for principals and social workers in schools (and maybe teachers I dont precisely recall) and for mental health professionals to notify the Illinois state police of a patient's or students status. This will be entered into a database so if that person goes thru a firearm related background check it should show up. That's why as I understand it that Illinois does not offer concealed carry reciprocity with other states... because they refuse to report.

What if they were showing signs of mental illness while texting and driving?

As a nation, I should note, our mental health resources are less than abundant. A lot of crime, poverty, and homelessness can be avoided with a little more resources on mental health.

I agree.
As someone with a diagnosed serious mental health problem,I can attest to the fact. You can in Illinois be if deemed a risk only be restrained for 72 hours unless extenuating circumstances exist. I have a mental Health PoA on File that lets the enumerated individuals do so for up to 14 days and I can not dispute it.

I think this hits the nail on the head.

How are we defining a mental illness? Bipolar, anxiety, BPD? I think making therapy/psychiatrists more available and affordable would be a good start.

The problem with locking up people who aren't yet criminals is that our prison system seems designed to turn people into criminals.

Not sure why we as a nation decided to shutter mental health institutions/psychiatric hospitals/mental health asylums; which at their best looked and operated more like college campuses than our current highly ineffective prisons.
