I wanted to get anyone's opinion on this scenario I ran into yesterday. I was shopping at Meijer. It was a Wednesday evening, so the store wasn't really crowded. I walked down, I believe, the cereal aisle and spotted $30 on the ground - a $20.00 bill and a $10.00 bill. I looked down the aisle and saw no one in it. I stood for about 30 seconds and waited to see if anyone came down the aisle. No one did. I left my cart and even poked back out into the midway to see if anyone looked like they lost money. No one did.

So I walked back into the aisle and casually picked up the money. I continued to stand with it in my hand for the next minute or so expecting someone to come, so I could give the money and be the good Samaritan. Again, no one came. So at that point I put the money in my pocket and continued shopping. I left the store after checking out and kept the money.

What would you all have done in that situation? Leave it on the ground? Pocket it? Turn it into the front of the store? It's only $30, but that buys me a round of golf.

Probably would of walked over an aisle or two to see if anyone was around an asked if they dropped money. If not, probably pocket it.

You fucking savage

You stole 30 bucks from some poor senior citizen with dementia that probably didn't realize she dropped her grocery money. Now she will probably starve to death. I hope you're happy.

Would you have actually handed the cash over had you asked someone if it was theirs and they said yes, or if they came strolling up and asked if you had seen cash on the ground? If so, then good on you, enjoy your free round of golf.

Enjoy the golf. If you are hit in the head by an errant drive from another hole you will know that you should have turned the money in.

Having been the beneficiary of considerate Meijer*** employee(s) who found and turned into their lost and found a pair of pricey prescription eyeglasses & a motorola z (or whatever the modular device android model is, awesome speaker add-on, btw) I'd set on a shelf while examining merchandise and walked off without, I'd pay it back/forward and turn in anything under $400.

i think you did the bare minimum of what was right. that sounds bad but i think you are fine. i might of turned it into the store manager. but the chances are just as slim of someone losing 30 dollars and thinking they might go to the customer service counter and saying yep here it is!

so you are good. i thinking seeking people out is over the top.

i've lost plenty of money before. you live and you learn.

I had a confusing childhood. My dad would have left it there simply because it wasn't his. My mom would have put her foot on it and made sure no one saw her before she picked it up and put it in her purse. My stepfather would have been in the meat section shoplifting steaks.

Probably only would have given it had someone asked me. I wouldn't have asked anyone else about it.

Haha. I thought about that. Figured I would get T-Boned (no pun intended) driving home from the store. Then I would have known the answer.

There's really not much more you could have done unless you can read minds and/or have a crystal ball to consult as to who's bread that was.

The person that lost it might not have even known it at the time. If they intended to pay with plastic, they very well might not have noticed until they'd left for home. Theoretically, though most unlikely, they don't even know they lost it right now.

It's a bummer. Life's a bummer sometimes.

I see no flaw in the effort. It's a shame you want to throw it away on golf, but you do you.

During your round of golf I hope you keep the kids who have no food to eat because mom lost her tip money from the strip club in your thoughts...

I do like Bagels' suggestion of placing it on the ponies. I'm still ahead either way.

She shouldn't worry. I likely have already paid her back 10-fold.

I'd have asked him/her to state how much they'd lost first. Unfortunately then you open yourself to the charge of "what you don't believe me". Most people seem like they'd say yeah merely off instinct.

Do they no longer make announcements over loudspeakers in stores, esp grocery stores. Recall as a kid getting summoned to customer service at larger stores when I'd wander off while the adults were shopping.

My thought on found money is $5 and under, pick it up and pocket it. I've lost plenty of singles and fives in my time, life comes at you fast... enjoy the cash coming back to you. A $10 or higher, you did about all that can be expected. I'd keep my head on a swivel thru the rest of the trip and if I saw someone doing the freak out pocket pat down, I would go up to them and ask if they lost $30.
