Do they no longer make announcements over loudspeakers in stores, esp grocery stores. Recall as a kid getting summoned to customer service at larger stores when I'd wander off while the adults were shopping.

What the hell are they going to announce? Hey buddy, if you lost $30 in cash please see the store manager ... it'd be a Cabbage Patch Kid stampede.

maybe ask them to identify the individuals pictured on the 2 bills that comprise the $30. it'd at least be a low-level math test (like winning a Kanaydian lottery), see if they could figure out the denominations and corresponding dead white guys that make up 2 bills worth $30.

This reminds me of a situation where I once found a dime bag of weed at a gas station and there was a cop present. For a moment I thought I should give this dime bag of weed to the cop and then I thought well it's probably better to just throw it in the trash just in case he thinks the weed was mine.

On the money thing I was walking out of the Jewel one day and this woman was dropping bills as she walked out the door. I mentioned it to her and gave her the money. Another time I found an extra dollar at Jewel in the machine and I turned it into the lady at the self-checkout.

In the case of a store it's unlikely the person who left a dollar or dropped money in the store would return back to the store and say they dropped money. So unless you saw a person drop the money there is no reasonable way that the money could be tracked down. If you turn the money into the store the question is, "What is the store going to do with the money if the person who supposedly lost it does not come back to claim it?" They're going to keep it and you probably should too.

If an armored truck spreads 20s all around a parking lot if you see the truck it's not right to take the money. If you find a wallet and there's cash in it you should not take it. If you find a significant amount of money over $100 you may want to report that to the police.

One time I was wearing a hoodie and my wallet dropped out of my pocket. When I was driving and realized I drove back to the place where I dropped it. I found my wallet, but someone stole the $60 I had just gotten from the ATM out of the wallet. They took the money in less than 10 minutes from when I dropped the wallet.

I once went to a police auction in the city and they had a lot of stolen property in particular bicycles that are stolen and that the real owners never claim. So what do the police do? They auction the stuff off and they keep the money. What that means is that after a reasonable attempt has been made to find the owner the property rights transfer to the people who found it.

You did the right thing.

Now go buy $30 worth of lottery tickets. Better spent than the fortune teller.

Wife was shopping at Meijer when our kids were little, had a bathroom emergency. When they exited, she realized she had left her purse in the restroom. Another lady was in there at the time, and when she left, wife went back in to get her purse. Purse was still there, but at checkout, she recognized $60 cash was gone. She went and told the store manager, just to rant and relay the info to someone, he gave her $60, possibly out of his own pocket, not sure. They built a new store about two miles from our house, get almost all our business.

tl;dr Meijer, IRL good place, buys groceries.

To the OP-the amount makes it easy to try to return through the store- I found some cash, never say how much. $30 is an odd amount, not quickly guessed unless you lost it. (If you just find a $20, hard not to guess that). Yes, takes more time, maybe more than you want to spend. Might not get the cash right away, may have to go back. That is approaching my level of concern for turning it in, any higher, and I would not keep it, probably.

If one is of the mind that $30 is pocket change and not to be kept in a wallet or purse, then one must accept the possibility of losing said pocket change.

My father once left a $100+ voucher in the OTB machine... realized it about a minute and a half later and of course it was gone.

One time at the OTB, I found a voucher in the machine for over $100. I bet it all on the next gray horse I saw (as I always do). I ended up winning $750.
