Only explanation I can think of....

I made comments when others were reluctant. After years of withstanding the backlash of more liberal minded members of the board and still standing, others probably felt more comfortable expressing themselves more openly. I was a trailblazer!

There is nothing I despise more than racial intolerance. And the bigger problem with Trump's language/actions and racist people is that it makes rational discussion on the reason for inequities all the more difficult. It rightly puts disaffected groups on the defensive. So when we want to talk about educational achievement gaps (for instance), it quickly devolves into tired stereotypes.
