Doing anything simply in order to "increase the public's sense of safety" is almost certainly going to get a hard 'no' from me, such as 'duck and cover' drills, the Patriot Act, and the TSA.

It just seemed a strange reply to a guy who thinks I should be able to buy a nuclear weapon.

Ideally, no one would have a nuclear weapon.

You want someone to have tanks, though. I guess just "special people" who can be trusted with tanks.

Since you ruined my bit, yes I am in favor on specially licensed and trained individuals having access to high power weapons and incendiary devices.

Are you on board with those common sense restrictions?

Yes there is a reason for reasonable restrictions on firearms. I believe that was also included in the majority opinion within Heller and McDonald.
However...
Making magazines hold fewer than 10 rounds does nothing for public safety. And it certainly does not serve the public's interest or trust to make illegal things that were perfectly legal yesterday and confiscate and destroy personal property. Should they have grandfathered in these items I might feel differently. Especially considering that the people of that town aren't running around shooting up the town.

I agree with you.

You can't pass a law that makes previously legal purchases illegal and not pay out the value of the items.

Never mind that the levied fine completely shits all over the 8th Amendment.

The problem I have with that "common sense" is that I don't particularly trust the U.S. military- or any military, really- and I certainly don't trust the people running the country.

What are the upsides to civilians having military-grade weapons? We see the negatives all the time. Where are the positives?

Define military grade... I'm fuzzy on that.

Is the M1911 still considered "military grade" though it was phased out of service? I guess that makes the M9 "military grade" too. Of what use are Remington 700's and Mossberg 590's, anyway?

Funny thing about the 1911... absolutely designed for the military and exclusively in the hands of the military for decades... but the civilian models are considerably better in quality and reliability and safety than the original military version.
That m9 tho... man a lot of troops were pissed over that adaptation.

It's interesting that everyone seems to be ignoring JORR saying all weapons should be legal and instead obsfucating with "military grade".

Regarding folk’s arguments that if you are for the second amendment then why not nukes, tanks and cannon for everyone? I would say as the text says right to bear “arms” people and courts could assume that means small arms (an acceptable term).

Most of the responses were in response to crazy old JORR wanting citizens to have bazookas and rail guns.

If the 2nd Amendment says it's okay, I want an atlatl. The only thing stopping a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a spear-launcher.
