My neighbors are big-time farmers. One of their employees, working many hours in a busy planting season, fell asleep while running a huge articulated tractor tilling a long field. The auto steer program beeps at you when you near the end of the field, and ramps up if you ignore it, but won't stop the tractor. Poor guy center-punched a big oak tree. His big mistake was driving it back to the road, about a mile away- broken windshield and destroyed radiator sprayed the interior down with coolant and hydraulic fluid. Ruined the interior and leather air-ride seat, along with the front end damage. Seems like the damage was $30K. The boss made a deal with the employee to keep his job and pay it back over time, the part that insurance didn't pay. He's a really great guy, apparently a great employee, just pushed it too far. At least no one got hurt. The worst part was the adult children kept the accident form their Dad, the Boss. He saw the tractor at the dealership and made some wisecracks about the owner, only to be told it was his tractor. Didn't go over too well, I hear.

Last year, another local farmer had an employee ride a rig into a pond while he played on his phone.

These companies are glomming lifeforms in a similar way to how Bill Gates glommed DOS. The major differences being that the development of the seeds occurred over a much longer period than the computer tech and that the stakes are much higher when it concerns the world's food supply.

I think it has a negative effect on the animals that would normally eat the seeds. I know people think animal rights are foofy, but it weakens the health of the biosphere.

Well, I think the jury is still out on those types of concerns, but this is an example of capitalism run amok. For hundreds, even thousands of years man has worked to improve agriculture with others building upon the work of those that came before. Now you have corporations building on the work of others and claiming exclusive ownership. It's a crime against humanity.

The larger impact probably has more to do with the increase in size of fields, the death of the diversified farm and the elimination of fence rows/hedge rows. The farms I know that still have cattle, fencerows abd different rotations besides corn/beans don’t seem to have the dearth of small game. But it’s a small sample size and things like rabbits are so damn cyclical it’s hard to know.

The effects of capitalism and herbicides have done wonders for the monarch butterfly populations in North America.

most gmo food is selective breeding. i dont see much issue with that. the crisper modified stuff is a bit scary, but i find comfort in the fact that most life is edible. it's not going to matter a whole lot what we create to eat. i think it's worse that we spray insecticide and wash everything too much.
