I think you would have liked it. You may even like it now without seeing the original show.

No, it bored the hell out of me. I tried on several occasions to watch it as I liked most of the actors. But then again, it was during the Bulls run & the black shows era of Fox tv, so I had little interest in broadcast tv.

The problem is that this type of thinking isn't stigmatized the way it should be. In fact, in certain circles it's celebrated.

You think you're better than someone else because you spend your money on European vacations and French wine rather than Jet Skis and Monster Truck Rallies? Well, of course I do. I'm just not ignorant enough to go around saying it. And deep down I know it isn't true anyway.

The proper response to that type of dumbass is "would you kill people from 'that sector' if you could get away with it?"

Not after season 2-3. It was right around the time Fox tired on the idea of a Black Thursday block, and that In Living Color should be Jim Carrey's show.

My wife is a typical big city liberal. She admits she really had her eyes opened when I made her come on the county fair racing circuit with me. Suddenly she realized that if there wasn't a Trader Joe's in our neighborhood she couldn't feed herself yet she was reflexively looking down on that guy who spent all day feeding hogs. And when you actually get into discussions with rural people, you realize they are as diverse in thought as people in cities. And some of them can and do go to Ivy League schools. Some even write speeches for Bruce Rauner. And my experience is this: when it comes to racism, the educated guy from the city is likely to be far more racist- at least on a personal level rather than in the abstract- than the good ole boy who usually just takes everyone as an individual.

We now have the true reason for Reader's Fox hate.

Fascinating.

I have the exact opposite experience. And I try to be open minded.

But it's complex. If the good ol boy says, "no, no, we gotta couple of real nice n*****s down at work" he's judging them individually but still a little racist.

Well, I'll give you an example. I know plenty of white guys who work with horses, live on backstretches, are kind of transient. They work along side blacks and Hispanics and nobody thinks they're better than the other guy. Everyone I know from the city would consider those white guys "hillbillies" and assume they're racist. But those fuckers judging them don't live alongside black and brown people. As soon as they have money they segregate themselves.

I really really disliked Rosanne. Depressing. You won't catch me watching it now either. I watch TV to escape reality, not indulge in it.

That's a quote from a long time ago.

I do hear some things like that once in a while that aren't too far from that. I dont get to choose my customers/campground neighbors though.

But we could still be talking about "he's one the good ones" type stuff in that scenario.

Yeah! All those racist hillbillies are worthy of their stereotype, but don't dare suggest that women are usually primary caregivers!

These stereotypes would go away if the good moderate hill folk like yourself denounced the radical ones.

You're right. Every person in rural communities and in the south is open minded and not one of them is racist at all. And my pointing out that people can be racist but not hate every single black person definitely has relevance in the conversation on child care.

This is a true statement and one of my biggest problems with the hypocritical nature of outspoken liberals. All is fine and good until it becomes their backyard.

So it's an all or nothing proposition, huh? Every hillbilly is racist or none of them are? Rick would be proud of the lack of gray area here.

It's funny - I used to think you were better than this.

I never would have guessed you to be someone who doesn't realize that categorizing rural people as racist is the definition of stereotyping.

I definitely wouldn't have guessed you were someone who would then try to act like you were just saying "some rural people are racist." What would the point of that statement be? There are racist people of all stripes.

Just be honest. You think and have always thought that rural people are all racist based on your 3 interactions with them. And then you are the one who acts indignant and talks down to me when I object to your generalizations.
