So your premise is that from inception through adulthood (18 years), a mother misses a grand total of 8 weeks off. PTO is not gender specific, so that balances out across the sexes.

Some of the stuff we talk about here is the issue.

These two things are both true:

Women are more pre-disposed to nurturing the child more than men.

That generalization should not (in a perfect world) affect anyone's hiring practices.

Like I said, assuming that an individual is going to work less or take more time off because of her sex is egregious. But when a woman decides to leave at 5:00 everyday to take care of her family and others are killing at the office every night until eight- and some of them may be women too- the one that leaves at five shouldn't expect to advance like the others. And there are simply less women willing to put in those hours.

BRick seems to think that making those choices shouldn't affect advancement and salary. I'm open to the argument as to why they shouldn't. We can make whatever kind of society we want. But it's usually best not to fight against human nature. That's why communism doesn't work. There will always be the person who isn't satisfied with their "fair share" and who will aggressively grab more. It's usually a man.

If we make these two assumptions:
1) The time for the pregnancy leave is reasonably small to not have a major effect.
2) The worker still puts in enough hours to be full time and capable of doing the job they were hired to do

Their choices should not affect advancement and salary. I think it's unreasonable for companies to ask workers to put in significantly more time for no extra pay though. I don't think someone working 80 hours a week(on salary) should be prioritized over someone who isn't willing to do that unreasonable request. I understand there are times when extra work may be required above the mythical 40 hours of work for salaried employees but I don't think an employee should be promoted over because they are taking care of kids instead of working 80 hour weeks. I think that type of arrangement is unfair to both employees.

As I've said though, I have a different view of the workplace than you do. You have a more old fashioned look at it just like my dad did where you do what your employer says and don't have an option. If you are needed to work 65 hours in a week then you do that even though you are working for free for 25 hours there. If something needs to be done on a weekend then you do it. Now, the reward for that was others got laid off and workloads like that became normalized. A funny thing happened though. The younger workers would say "No, I'm busy" when asked to do the same. They, like me, learned about the corporate world by seeing their parents worried about layoffs, being sold, working long hours for no real benefit to them, companies being sold and restructured.

So no, if a woman, or a man, needs to take their kid to a doctors appointment, I don't think they should have their entire career path get derailed because of it and always be behind.

I'm telling you what the law was and why a 4 month old law would not yet be showing gains in the gender pay gap in California.

Actually, that's not the view of the workplace I have. I don't think an employer owns your time. I believe in the nine-to-five. It's your generation that has allowed electronics to make you an around-the-clock employee.

But if you really want to make money and advance through a corporation, you're going to be competing against people- mostly men but some women- who have very little interest in life outside the office.
