I have MANY dogs but the old one of the bunch is the one that keeps me up at night. Some nights she she just doesn’t want to be alone so I get to crash in the guest room with a the 15 year old dog. If she could still climb stairs I’d just let upstairs but her legs don’t work well anymore.

Congrats on the pup Nas.

Today. Fighting sleep. Burst of energy for a good hour or so and then he's down for 30 mins to a couple of hours.

+1... one of the best ways to judge a man is how he treats a pet.

Our yellow lab had to be put down last year. Miss it bad. Also lost the blue heeler. Have the 10 y/o chocolate lab left. It’s quiet and lonely.

When do you crate your dog? Why? Seems like something that makes them sad.

We had a dog that claimed every crate as her’s. And god help you if you put a blanket or bed in there. I swear she patrolled the house to make sure no crate ever had a bed in it.

We had multiple dogs and thus multiple crates. The husky would go from crate to crate removing all items from the crates. It was a personal affront to her that any dog would want a bed or toy in their den.

dogs actually like the crate. Put a blanket over the top of it and it becomes a very nice and safe retreat for the dog. I don't have a crate anymore, but even at 12 years old when Lionel goes to daycare he often goes on his own into one of the crates to take naps and relax.

As puppies, you should always put them in a crate when you leave them alone until they are housebroken. The crate helps with house breaking because no dog wants to pee/poop where they are sleeping so it helps them learn to hold it until you get home. Granted with puppies they should be taken out ever couple hours becaus of their bladder size so I wouldn't leave them in the crate too long.

Over the past 20 years we had two Bichon Frise dogs live roughly 10 years each.

After the first one passed suddenly we got another one within a few moths.

They are smart, friendly and small to medium size... about 12 to 15 lbs and terrific with kids.

When the second one passed we found out it was due to pancreatitis. We were careful but not militant about his diet.

Be extremely mindful of what and how much your pup/dog eats and drinks. This effects every facet of their health.

Our new dog gets absolutely no table scraps, drinks bottled water and a digestive friendly diet from the veterinarian. It may sound a bit excessive but it will save you in the long run on an unhealthy pet and vet bills.

That's a great looking pup. They do learn to love the crate as security and solace. Good luck, Nas!

I thought of this thread this morning when my dog grabbed a piece of bacon from my daughter's plate. He has never done this in his life. We trained him from a pup not to. Not sure what happened but when I told him to stop, he put his head down and walked off. Once in five years isn't bad. I think we might have forgotten to feed him.

Nas, one thing that was helpful was when he was a pup... I would have him wait for a release for his food, but I would have him do the same for treats or anything. Set pieces of food in front of him and pick it up every time he goes to eat it. Only allow him to eat it once he sits and you give him his release word. Probably good for kids to do with him... it takes some patience. Definitely pays off if you drill it early, though. I could throw a piece of food at his feet and he won't eat it until he looks over and I tell him okay.

Just crate at first and not for long periods of time. It helps them to feel secure. They will go to that crate voluntarily for the rest of their life.

Question, when you go out and buy a Bichon Frise, do they cut your balls off right there, on the spot?

To bad we couldn't do that for some members of this board.

I'll give it a try. He likes to roam freely. He's tried to break out of the saddle.

He chews on my clothes socks but outside of that there haven't been any issues. The woman I got him from had potty trained all of the dogs. If he doesn't make it outside quick enough or at 3 in the morning he'll piss on the pads. That's a relief because Lady Nas wanted to kill me when I told her I bought a dog a day before I was going to pick him up.

What did you feed him as a puppy?
