Congrats to California on continuing to make it impossible for real estate developers to do business in your state. And they wonder why they have a serious shortage of housing stock. This is why 6 million Californians moved to other states in the last decade. The housing shortage in California can largely be blamed on restrictive zoning which has made it impractical to build new housing.

It's almost as if California is run by people who do not understand the basics of supply and demand and how they impact housing markets.

Downtown LA is undergoing massive redevelopment and increases in condo styled units. I was shocked at the level of homelessness near the downtown area after we went to a restaurant built in a redeveloping area.

Cali is such a place of contradictions.

The cost to live is out of control. And the factionalism even among the Democrats far exceeds the crap we have in Illinois. There is outright disdain between folks from LA and SF.

Still I have to applaud Governor Brown for digging that state out of a huge hole in the recession.

in the last 2 years i've been to san diego, LA, and SF. the former was pretty nice. i didn't see much to complain about. the latter 2 was awful. i spent more time in SF. we literally stepped over homeless people most of the time. and it stunk. i'm like this is a sizeable problem.

LA has its problems, but these issues become even more pronounced in the Bay area. Quite simply NIMBY's have prevented the construction of high rises, which are the only way you can increase your housing stock on places where you don't have the available land. They have to build for density to solve their shortage and developers are not being allowed to do so.

As price goes up, the quantity supplied is supposed to go up. This is Micro 101, but the government has stepped in and while price has gone up, they have ensured that supply has not been able to go up. This is a prime example where government needs to step out of the way and allow the Law of Supply to take care of things

No one is saying you need "massive skyscrapers", but you also shouldn't have zoning rules in a city center which cap roof heights at 40 feet.

NYC builds as high as possible. Still a massive housing shortage. It's like adding lanes on an expressway. It fills up quick and then it's the same.

To say nothing of the properties that have been given over to full-time Airbnb usage, New York is full to bursting with condos that lie vacant because they exist only as offshore real estate investments or outright money laundering. If San Francisco threw itself to the mercy of the free market, going cow-wild (not hog, they have a Cow Palace) and throwing up highrise condos everywhere, why would I believe this would adequately address a housing shortage and not result in more dwellings that no one lives in nor will ever live in?

Is there really envy for a state where you have to live 2+ hours from your job if you want to own a home? I'd say 6 million people packing up and leaving in a decade speaks volumes for the situation. I think a lot of people who like California are figuring out they can get most of what California offers at a cheaper price in Oregon.

NYC is one of the unique global cities where a large amount of money is laundered through real estate. not everything built is used as a residence.

As San Francisco becomes (or has become) Pacific Manhattan, the same would happen there but with The Goddamn Chinese laundering money instead of Russians, Arabs, etc.

Please tell me how you address a housing shortage if you do not allow any new building. Besides, if you end up with a situation where you overbuild your inventory, you ultimately drive down prices for the entire market.

California is going to continue to see an increase in their homeless population and it is a problem that is entirely the making of the government. This is a government which has interfered in the market and prevented the construction of new housing, which would address the shortage and in turn prevent the runaway increase in pricing of the preexisting housing stock.

Can we build up Oakland instead? Hold up your right hand, San Francisco is your thumbnail. There's nowhere left to build. A tech job in the South Bay should not entitle you to Adult Theme Park life in the (tiny) big city.
