Yup. I don’t get people who don’t get camping.

I guess when you turn soft and faggy it's hard to revert to rugged outdoorsmanlike masculinity.

Boy or girl Frank?

We'll find out in the delivery room.

I should have known you would be old school.

Camping in summer is awesome. Research. Research.
Then...no mossies. Yellowstone in summer said to be awful. Far too many people clogging the place up.
"nobody goes there. it's too popular"

National Forest campgrounds are my favorite.
For Colorado here is a great starter place with modern showers and terlets. 6500' elev. Easy hike up the side of the mountain for a 'view'. Camp beside the Poudre River. Fish along the river. Show up on a Monday or Tuesday and no reservation needed. About 11AM works best. 40 miles west of Fort Collins. Great drive up. Many CGs along the way.

Or keep going to 2nd favorite CG, Chambers Lake CG at 10,000'. UFB. But no showers. Again, show up on Monday. They have about 9 no res allowed campsites. Moose at this one, maybe.

End of June going to NYC for a long weekend with my wife, her boss and boss' husband. Not sure what plans are yet. I'd like to go to the
Museum of Modern Art and if we could make it to a Yankees or Mets game that might be fun. The women will shop during the day and the
guys will be doing stuff. Never been to NYC so I guess I'll just take it in and try to enjoy it.

July visiting parents in Charlotte area. No big plans. Would love to drive out to Asheville for a day, maybe golf once. Going to visit with
my brothers family and celebrate the 1st anniversary of his death, probably spread his ashes.

August in Nashville for almost a week for work. My wife will tag along and we will hang out in the evenings. Open to suggestions on this
one. I know there is a Nashville thread somewhere I will need to read over.

( a bit past summer ) October back to NYC with my wife and her kids. Pretty sure we will do 9/11 museum, see a Broadway show and walk the Highline.

Other than that I hope to get out and play a few nice golf courses in WI and IL.

Will you be using Munich as your homebase for a longer trip or you stopping Oktoberfest during a longer adventure throughout Europe?

If you wants some tips on tents and day trips I can throw some your way.

Very good question. We decided that spending an entire Europe trip at Oktoberfest was way too much drinking even for my experienced liver. We are starting out in Amsterdam and then taking the train down to Munich. I have a friend who lives in Amsterdam, and he has given us a whole bunch of things to do there (yeah yeah insert jokes here).

In any case, it'll just be those two places.

But heck yeah, let me know which tents are best. In doing research, the entire thing is quite overwhelming. I'd prefer to get tickets in advance, but of course that is difficult if don't know which tents are best. TIA

I was in Traverse City last fall. We did one of those bike and brewery tours. Fun as hell. They have a lot of great brew places.

I'd say go the festival twice. I've gone to Oktoberfest twice for a week and we ended up going twice to Oktoberfest each time which was enough. You won't need reservations/tickets unless you're with a very large group.

Not sure when you'll be in Munich but the weekdays (Mon-Thurs) are much nicer crowd wise. We usually go the fest around 2-3pm and you'll have wide availability of seating. When you walk in make sure to ask the servers if the table are reserved for later. A table may be open 11am - afternoon but at 5pm some become reserved for ticketholders. The fest is calm day drinking from 11am - 5pm-ish and then gets rowdier with tents filling up, people being drunk and oompah bands going. You will need only a max of 4 beers with 2-3 being the sweet spot (I recall them being 12 euros with 2-3 euro for tip). We usually dip out around 8-9pm and collapse in bed.

I haven't hit all the tents but from the ones that I did:
Hofbrau - largest, very international/tourists, a lot English speakers (USA, England, Australia)
Hacker Pschorr - my favorite. tasty beer, rowdy tent, best decorations
Augustiner - my favorite Oktoberfest beer. a lot of reserved tables, good atmosphere

There's something like 10-12 tents. During the days it's easy to walk into each one to soak up the scenery/atmosphere. Oktoberfest is a huge carnival so you'll have a whole other section of roller coasters, bumper cars, carnival games and food stands. During the day you'll likely see school children on a field trip.

We've planned our trip so it's one day at the fest then a day or two of sightseeing (recovery). We've somewhat neglected sightseeing Munich by doing day trips instead. It's really easy to get to Innsbruck, Salzburg, Garmish-Partenkirchen, Neuschwanstein (castle that inspired Disney).

pack bepto. you will have the dirtiest gas and shits for those 5 days. the bavarians aren't big vegetable people. it'll be a diet of beer, encased meats, potatoes and kraut. you will be ripping ass often and dropping majestic deuces those 5 days.

Excellent info, many thanks. Yes we heard if you get there early you do not need tickets. We are walking distance, hotel wise.

We usually camp in Door County twice a year, once in August ( a week) and again in October (long weekend). August is nice because we can rent boats a couple days, but there is a chance its hotter than what's ideal. October is more relaxed, low-key, but it was in the 20's at night one year....

Unless you're into rugged, mountain man type camping, I think Door County is perfect. We stay at Peninsula State Park, and you could hang at the campsite and fish or hike all day, but you're also close to some cool small towns with restaurants, breweries, etc. We tent camp, but I decided awhile ago that the tent will be big enough for me to stand up in and will always have an air mattress.

Couple of concerts. Couple of trips to the in-laws in Michigan. Taking the kids to the Dells right before Labor Day. Maybe a couple of ball games.

Agreed but it definitely isn't for everyone. I'll take a couple trips to Door Co camping and fishing this summer. Got a house rented outside of Traverse City for 10 days in June for a family vacation.

I have to go to the shit hole of America in July, also known as St. Louis ,for a family wedding. Trying to save the trip by convincing the family to swing by the Ozarks afterwards. We will see.

Be sure to tour the bombed out buildings nearby major roads. Their prices are reasonable.
