for a 4 hour docuseries on ID, some of this really goes in circles. i've seen some other docs on the subject already, but for anyone who isn't familiar with The Original Night Stalker, this will definitely get you up to speed. interviews with some of the former victims, police that worked the case, and then "citizen sleuths" that are trying to look through the cracks.

they sent the only recorded message from the killer, the "i'm gonna kill you" voicemail, to an audio guy who totally verified what i always suspected...there wasn't talking in the background, it was something he was watching.

i can't believe they never caught this guy, but he has to be the most diabolical serial rapist/killer of all time to span the amount of time he has without ever getting nailed.

they have his DNA even.

This case and the Zodiac case are two which have always interested me. There is just so much mystery surrounding both of them and it's almost crazy that neither has been solved.

I'd guess that both of them are dead (especially Zodiac as that is now 40+ years in the past)

Maybe he feared for his life when he killed these people.

i realize this wasn't a relevant consideration back in 1976, or even 1986; but in 2018, are all new cop hires/current police officers DNA tested and their DNA uploaded to the national database that they cross-reference DNA samples found in connection with crime scenes. My guess is the power of police unions = no?

plenty of reasons, for one, cops often work crime scenes and the way they can get touch DNA off of items at a crime scene nowadays, having a library of known cop DNA profiles would make processing DNA from crime scenes easier. Instead of saying "we have unknown male or female DNA" they'd be able to go, "oh, some cop working the crime scene's DNA"

I mean my shit is indexed thanks to my time in the Army, as is almost all modern veterans. Now to access it requires a specific court order, but if cops were indexed like this I don't see why the Golden State killer investigators couldn't have petitioned to search it given the nature of the crimes.

he was a cop in 1979.

soldiers DNA is kept so when they are blown to bits they can put all the right bits in the right bag.

Yes that was the intent when the program was initiated in 1992, but since then they have expanded it to a genomic project at the VA and in some limited cases criminal inquiries.

They released today how they got him. They went through one of the private ancestry DNA companies. Won't say what one. So once again, them saying that your information is secure is bullshit.

From what I understand, they didn't even go to his DNA but rather found some matches with relatives. So if you are going to commit a crime, make sure your family doesn't sign up for those services!

after reading about the cases and this GSK's exploits--dude would leap backyard fences in a single-bound and dangle off roofs and swing through open windows, i was expecting some sort of quasi-super-hero type. the released mugshot--dude's 4 decades on since he committed these offenses...disappointing. seemed like a lot of folks thought dude had to be in his late teens/early 20's because of the athleticism of some of his exploits. sounds like he was active from early-mid 20's to late 20's/early 30's.
