Jesus, this really is out of 1984. What does "malicious communications" mean?

Well stupid youtube videos where you have a dog do a Nazi salute will get you arrested and flicking off a traffic camera is 8 months in jail.

If I were British, I'd be about where the colonists were in 1775 in regards to my feeling towards government.

We've issued the following statement following reports of social media posts being made in relation to Alder Hey Hospital and the ongoing situation with Alfie Evans:

Chief Inspector Chris Gibson said: “Merseyside Police has been made aware of a number of social media posts which have been made with reference to Alder Hey Hospital and the ongoing situation involving Alfie Evans.

“I would like to make people aware that these posts are being monitored and remind social media users that any offences including malicious communications and threatening behaviour will be investigated and where necessary will be acted upon.”

It's safe to say that the UK is no longer a free country by any stretch of the imagination.

I really dont believe they should be allowed to have nuclear weapons or even a military anymore. I talk a lot of about the imminent doom of the USA, but in Britain they are already there. What happens when Sadiq Khan is PM and has a button to press? It's a scary thought.

People laugh when I say the US could turn into an authoritarian nightmare but then the UK is about halfway there. I don't think it's hyperbole to even say that at this point.

Yeah, that's bad enough, but you could at least hope they were one-offs. But now making preemptive threats to the general public warning against vague "malicious" statements? Truly Orwellian.

It could happen here but it’s a lot less likely. Most British people seem to enjoy being the subjects of a monarch.

As I said, the dystopian future novels of the 20th century didn't warn people. They instead presented a blueprint for governments of the 21st century.

It's not hyperbole, primarily because, IMO, we are so far-removed from any real national strife that we've forgotten how close we are at all times to everything falling apart.

Our institutions are pretty strong, though.

haha do you know any British people? I dont think anyone hates the UK more than the British.

They dont have a constitution. Their democracy is MUCH less representative than ours. Its a bicameral legislature with one house, which I admit is mostly symbolic and pointless, constituted LITERALLY of lords. Whereas Russia, Spain and France had their revolutions and Germany had its political system dismantled after WW1, Britain has maintained the same strident class system and weak democratic adherence for more than a century now.

The people there hate it, especially since the (kind of necessary) Thatcher reforms pretty much put a nail in the coffin of their global relevance and prestige, but they have no avenue to fight back. They even voted to leave the EU and here we are two years later and their government has basically taken that referendum, which they were absolutely compelled to follow, and ignored it. What can they do?

It's going to be hilarious when their next PM is a literal Putin/Assad apologist. We joke about Trump being a puppet of Putin, but holy shit Corbyn actually is, and not because Putin has anything over him, but because he wants to be.

The judges comments on the sentence (and the police's own twitter posts on it) highlighted the middle finger to the cameras.

Also, who the fuck cares if he has a laser jammer? That's certainly not a punishment equaling the crime.

This is all happening in a country where twitter posts and youtube videos = fines and jail time. If CFMB exited in the UK, we would all be liable to jail time for the shit we say here.

So UK police if you're monitoring and I happen to visit your country, fuck your Queen, fuck your PM, and fuck your loyal opposition leader.

Sounds like residents of the UK realised they aren't worthy of freedom.

Good for them for being that self aware.

It is kind of funny to see how many were blaming the police/FBI for not doing more about the youtube comment of the Parkland shooter but are all over this.

Supporting Assad at arm's length makes more sense than supporting the Islamic State or the "moderate rebels" of Al-Qaeda. You need the religious minority to stay in power or the Sunnis will ethnically cleanse like they've never ethnically cleansed before.

Arresting people for Nazi Pugs and not following up on violent threats are not equal.

Social media posts were not the issue there. Direct in person threats and assaults which required police calls to his home were.

Hard to play that angle when you're also cozy with Hamas and Hezbollah while simultaneously praising the Mullahs. (Let's not even mention his praise for Maduro)

No. The YouTube comment was mentioned a ton. You can't erase that because it's inconvenient now.

Yeah Rick you're kinda doubling down on stupid right now. Willfully ignoring the differences between the two examples is going beyond Obtuse Rick.
