I'll concede that I'm a dumbass, but that's as far as I'll go. I'll meet you in the middle on this. I'm never afraid to negotiate my own ignorance on a great many things.

I said retard. You're a PC shit-lib who deep down is the conservative you say you hate. You just demonstrated it here by providing a skewed understanding of an amazingly complex phenomenon: the state of labor.

No offense, though.

Sorry if this was already posted but one of the selling points they use here to attract kids to trades is pay. You get paid to be an apprentice rather than take a loan to go to college and perhaps a worse job in the future.

Actually getting an apprenticeship--in the Chicago area, at least--is pretty hard, though.

Granted, states/cities/counties where more people are leaving aren't seeing quite the labor shortage that most of the country is. Leave Illinois and these jobs/positions can't be filled fast enough.

Ogie: That can be hard to do for many people.

However....as much as I love Chicago and Illinois....I've been nodding along when I hear younger people say that are thinking about leaving while they can. Sucks, but whatcha gonna do?

Since the whole Nas/Naws fiasco, I've been questioning how I pronounce words.

We all pronounce it was "werk," but shouldn't it be pronounced "woark"?

If my tone was at all saying, "trades are easy; pursue a trade," obviously not what I meant. My argument was simply that I'm surprised more people aren't trying for those lines of work.

I wouldn't go that far. I simply feel like being a racist is easy/lazy, and it just kinda makes me uncomfortable. Then again, Blazing Saddles is absolute fucking gold, so maybe I'm a retard after all.

And I've got conservative values, just like anyone else I guess. Who knows. Maybe you're right. The Sheriff is near.

Unions need to be done away with. They served their purpose back in the day, but now it's just a bunch of abuse/good ole boy network shit and so on. Feeding the fat cats at the top.

I guess it wasn't aimed at you per se. Just the overall thought that trades are a choice for many or gonna some how fix the unemployment in the younger generation.

1. its Difficult as hell to get into a union.
2. Labor Intensive as hell. Your gonna break down physically.
3. Its a different generation. Many are not interested in the trades. If the person is not interested in it why do we assume they are going to be good enough to make a living at it.

Yeah, I don't think most people understand the difference between labor unions and trade unions.

Labor unions (especially public sector) are useless, but trade unions really don't bother me.

The only tradesman I know is Darkside so I think I have a right to have certain opinions of the people who do those jobs.

I can tell you with certainty that in my HVAC industry there's not much young th talent coming out to replace the older guys. The average age in the industry is climbing every year, and is now if I remember correctly over 45. There is soon to be a massive shortage of workers and thats gonna drive pay rates and labor costs to consumers way up soon. Schools aren't trying to gtlet kids into trade schools. To them islets better to have an art history degree and serve coffee than to have spent your money on a trade school and pull down 30+ an hour.
This is a decent job. Sometimes the work is hard and the hours are long and there's stress but the pay is good and the benefits are there especially if you're in the union.

Well, that's the tricky part. I keep hearing that there are "tons" of jobs out there, but getting into a union is difficult. You also can't be over 40 and doing it. (Believe me, I've tried. I've also worked for a searched company that tried to do this.) And since so many people over 40 are without an industry....this is a problem. As far as the non-unionized HVAC and plumbing and construction (and so on) jobs go, you can be laid off at any time, the money sucks, the benefits suck, your body goes to shit, and what they really want are immigrants they can boss around and work to the bone. Nothing wrong with working hard, but if you want to live in a school district filled with kids who actually are ready to learn, then many of the jobs being touted ain't gonna cut it.

I'm sure you've had a lot of these experiences with non-union shops, but not all non-union shops are shit, my shop offers 100% health insurance for my workers and their families, and with competitive pay. I'm sure there are other non-union shops doing the same. Especially considering that there are a lot of companies with a limited amount of workers.

I have about 10-20 young people walk into my shop every year looking for a job, but they just come in off the street without a resume and all of them are causally dressed. I think the problem lies in the lack of job seeking preparation at the high school level.

The biggest problem with the HVAC industry is that most workers who are worth anything usually just end up starting their own business out of their garage. That's why you have a million companies and no workers. It is hard to keep good people even at a competitive pay and benefits when they think that they can make so much more.

You're right Bob. If not for that increased cost ( never mind that if you're getting a card carrying journeyman you're getting a well trained knowledgeable worker) why ,those benevolent employers would be passing those savings right on down to you.

Isn't that the theory on why raising the minimum wage is a bad idea? The minimum wage worker has his lower pay passed on to the consumer in terms of savings?

If you don't mind being run into the ground there's always a career at UPS. I rep quite a bit of UPS workers in Comp claims and it's shocking to see how much these guys physically break down after hauling packages for a couple decades. But, the pay is really decent considering the lack of education needed. The guys that have been there a while all pull down over $35 per hour and they also get about 10 hours of OT per week, although that is starting to slow down a bit at UPS with the rise of Amazon.

Peoples Gas is another high paying job for menial labor, but much like the UPS guys, the guys at the Gas company also fall apart after a while. Holding onto a jack hammer all day long is not good on the body.

I'm not familiar with crosschecks shop but knowing what I know about him I suspect he does good work. He gave me some solid advise when I was changing jobs years ago so I always appreciate that.

As far as unions go in this trade they're critical for workers. We're protected against bullshit business practices with seem to run rampant in this industry. My first job was with a nonunion outfit and they truly pulled some ugly shit on me, particularly after I got hurt doing something stupid I thought was stupid but the boss forced me to do. That shit doesn't fly with 597. My union requires a certain number of hours per year of ongoing training and that is good for you mb Mr. Enduser, because a lot of stuff is changing in this industry right about now.
Now bob if you think my union drives up your cost I'd say you're wrong. I'm getting significantly more than my union requires per scale because my work is damn solid and my company wants me to stay here. Chances are if you want a cheap ass bad install you can call four seasons and have some guy still in trade school install your shit but if you want it done right you want someone who has years of experience and training and will get it done proper. It will ultimately last significantly longer.
If you want to cheap out on labor costs... well dude I can say from experience and the shit I've seen you do get what you pay for.

Depending on the kind of inducer were talking about my union shop is generally less than half that amount.
Now that being said those fuckin ecm communicating induced are expensive as hell. From the supply house they're over 800 bucks.
