You dont know what you're talking about. This is certainly not the case with trade unions.

Now that being said those fuckin ecm communicating induced are expensive as hell. From the supply house they're over 800 bucks.

I'm just amazed that they think they can get away with it. With the internet and what not you can look up the price of parts. Ok, so a shop isn't going to bargain hunt on every part so maybe the $150 motor is $225. Unless it's the entire day to replace it(at that point just get a new furnace)where does that equal $1500? how dumb do they think people are?

Well... buy one and replace it yourself I guess.

yea I was an Uber driver (partially by choice, I have my AB and a CDL) until I got my degree. I'm not opposed to the trades at all, and I think driving trucks or working on boats in your late teens and twenties gives you a taste of what its actually like to work for a living. But there's only so many paths to being a bridge mate or a captain. And trucking? Forget it. That industry is f u c k e d for workers. You top out at $70-ish a year, probably less now with mandated e-logs. Those are the blue collar jobs I have experience with and I know things are different in other industries, but I get the feeling the story is mostly the same.

I mean look at Jason Goff. You cant be an SIU dropout and expect to get anywhere in life.

I bet that happened!
Anyway I have a tendency to undercharge my friends. I probably should reconsider my rates. That being said it's pretty hard to try to make any real money off my friends when their shit needs work.
I never charge my parents anything at all. However... pops has old ass shit that's starting to cost me real money to fix. R22 ain't cheap.

I can tell you with certainty that in my HVAC industry there's not much young th talent coming out to replace the older guys. The average age in the industry is climbing every year, and is now if I remember correctly over 45. There is soon to be a massive shortage of workers and thats gonna drive pay rates and labor costs to consumers way up soon. Schools aren't trying to gtlet kids into trade schools. To them islets better to have an art history degree and serve coffee than to have spent your money on a trade school and pull down 30+ an hour.
This is a decent job. Sometimes the work is hard and the hours are long and there's stress but the pay is good and the benefits are there especially if you're in the union.

Well, that's the tricky part. I keep hearing that there are "tons" of jobs out there, but getting into a union is difficult. You also can't be over 40 and doing it. (Believe me, I've tried. I've also worked for a searched company that tried to do this.) And since so many people over 40 are without an industry....this is a problem. As far as the non-unionized HVAC and plumbing and construction (and so on) jobs go, you can be laid off at any time, the money sucks, the benefits suck, your body goes to shit, and what they really want are immigrants they can boss around and work to the bone. Nothing wrong with working hard, but if you want to live in a school district filled with kids who actually are ready to learn, then many of the jobs being touted ain't gonna cut it.

I'm sure you've had a lot of these experiences with non-union shops, but not all non-union shops are shit, my shop offers 100% health insurance for my workers and their families, and with competitive pay. I'm sure there are other non-union shops doing the same. Especially considering that there are a lot of companies with a limited amount of workers.

I have about 10-20 young people walk into my shop every year looking for a job, but they just come in off the street without a resume and all of them are causally dressed. I think the problem lies in the lack of job seeking preparation at the high school level.

The biggest problem with the HVAC industry is that most workers who are worth anything usually just end up starting their own business out of their garage. That's why you have a million companies and no workers. It is hard to keep good people even at a competitive pay and benefits when they think that they can make so much more.

Can't argue with any of that...

Isn't that the theory on why raising the minimum wage is a bad idea? The minimum wage worker has his lower pay passed on to the consumer in terms of savings?

Exactly this. It is not like being in a trade is as easy as going to trade school. What makes people think that if these kids cannot make it in high school they are going to excel at a trade. Trades are not this easy thing. If you suck at a trade your not going to be working much.

If my tone was at all saying, "trades are easy; pursue a trade," obviously not what I meant. My argument was simply that I'm surprised more people aren't trying for those lines of work.

And I absolutely confess that I don't know much about anything in comparison to those who have been around the block. I'm in my early 30s and have a great deal to learn about life, so if I sound presumptuous and/or blatantly incorrect, my mistake. Draw it up to ignorance.

Quote:
I said retard. You're a PC shit-lib who deep down is the conservative you say you hate. You just demonstrated it here by providing a skewed understanding of an amazingly complex phenomenon: the state of labor.

No offense, though.

I wouldn't go that far. I simply feel like being a racist is easy/lazy, and it just kinda makes me uncomfortable. Then again, Blazing Saddles is absolute fucking gold, so maybe I'm a retard after all.

And I've got conservative values, just like anyone else I guess. Who knows. Maybe you're right. The Sheriff is near.

I guess it wasn't aimed at you per se. Just the overall thought that trades are a choice for many or gonna some how fix the unemployment in the younger generation.

1. its Difficult as hell to get into a union.
2. Labor Intensive as hell. Your gonna break down physically.
3. Its a different generation. Many are not interested in the trades. If the person is not interested in it why do we assume they are going to be good enough to make a living at it.

Its quicker and easier to just say "Millenials dont want to work!"

Nope.

I don't know enough about the subject matter.

But with how many conflicting statements (many seemingly very confident) it's pretty obvious there is a lot of bad info here.

Like if I said I knew all about nuclear reactors and went off about the flux capacitor, you wouldnt have to be an expert on nuclear reactors to know Im full of shit, right?

I CAN back up your statement about the age of your industry. I just happen to be very close to an HVAC guy who has mentioned that several times.

I can also attest to the fact that people I know who got into unions celebrate it like they just won the lottery and on the other hand many bitch about not being able to get in.

So, Im a little skeptical that one can just go to a trade school, graduate, and walk right into the union of their choice and start working.

I do think more kids should go into trades and less to college, though.

I have looked at it here and it seems pretty straight forward. Maybe the amount of work and demand plays a part but you interview, test, get vetted then do the 3 year apprenticeship. After that yeah you walk into the union. I assume by then they weeded out the bad?
