They don't like their 21-year-old stadium so they want a new one. In related news, Arizona can't pay its teachers.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/m ... 597057002/

Quote:
The Arizona Diamondbacks can leave Chase Field and end the team's 20-year residence at the downtown Phoenix stadium as early as 2022, Maricopa County leaders decided Wednesday.

The county Board of Supervisors passed the agreement 4-1 a week after making the deal public, ending a longstanding lawsuit. It allows the team to immediately start looking for another home in exchange for dropping its demand for the county to pay up to $187 million in stadium upgrades.

Under the agreement, if the Diamondbacks found a new location in Maricopa County, the team could leave Chase Field without penalty in 2022, five years earlier than the team's current contract.

A new stadium built on tribal land, an idea that has been rumored, would have to charge the same taxes as currently charged at Chase Field, according to the agreement.

I don't know anything about tribal law and how any of those tribes would have the billion+ to finance a ballpark but it certainly doesn't sound like a good idea. Most likely one of their giant dipshit suburbs gets a big idea to lure the team there and then it's their problem, or it's the entire state's problem, but it's definitely not gonna be the team's problem.

Perhaps there'd be no reservations about eliminating the 7th inning cut-off of booze sales.

Twenty years is the new maximum on stadiums.

In fairness, Reinsdorf was the one who told DC that the Nationals' stadium funding should be a "three-thirds, no-thirds" split.

eventually, states, municipalities, etc. will wise up and stop paying for/subsidizing stadiums. It's a piss poor investment and if you're in the position where a team wants you to foot the bill, you have to not be afraid to call their bluff. If they move, tough shit.

And I tend to believe that no city/county/state should be permitted to float any bond issue or issue any new tax to pay for as much as half the cost of any upgrades or construction of any new stadium. Or events like the Olympics/World Cup. Especially if they're running budget deficits.

Years ago you could make some arguments pro and con for a stadium agreement. With these claims after only 20 years hell no.

St. Louis is probably going to tear down the Jones Dome before they finish paying it off. Never should have built it in the first place (it was for the Patriots, oops).

The new stadium should be on the rez along the 101 somewhere in Scottsdale, Tempe, or Chandler. Near the Talking Stick casino would be great. Capacity needs to be reduced by at least 10,000. It’s depressing seeing the empty upper decks at every home game. First pitch would have to be changed from 6:40 to 7:10 because of traffic.

With the renovations over the last few years at the former US Cellular and in Kansas City, Chase Field is now the 2nd shittiest ballpark in MLB in front of the craptastic Trop in St. Pete. Nobody with any income lives anywhere near downtown. They want to go out by their minor league park at Talking Stick, where they can get traffic from the north and east legs of the 101 loop more easily, and where the trip from Mesa/Chandler/Gilbert is just as bad.

If they are on tribal land, will MLB let them put slot machines in the concession areas? Will you be able to play Keno on your cellphone? Those would be serious revenue enhancers for the tribe, which might actually make building the ballpark profitable.

STL is really the textbook example going forward. A 20 yr lease for all that money just to have the team pack up and leave. It's criminal.

I'd say as a taxpayer I'd be furious, but seeing as that I live in IL, we get similar treatment.

I never thought they would be able to leave that stadium early, let alone 5 years. Boy, is my face red.

Agreed 100%. We have to stop saying NO to this bullshit. This is one of my biggest pet peeves in sports.

Most cities that say "no" end up caving once the team leaves: Baltimore Colts, St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Seattle Super Sonics, Houston Oilers. LA Rams.
