think about it, the total amount of school shooting victims in one year do not equal one month worth of shootings in Chicago. So once again it only becomes a problem when it happens to suburban white people.

The holiday is not for active military or even retired.

I know that, but the active members probably have more nuanced opinions on the subject than the dead ones.

I think most of the active members would probably not want Memorial Day mocked in this way. You can be disgusted by the school gun violence and in favor of very strict gun control law changes without also disrespecting a holiday meant to honor those killed in service of their country.

Yeah I’m probably gonna just check outta here for a few days. Not much for me to bother with.

Too many all over. To say that the kids being killed in the school shootings, who are overwhelmingly white and middleclass, more important than the kids being killed on the inner city streets is bullshit.

You mean the people who stand guard and volunteer themselves to go fight at a moment’s notice so that you can say dumb shit on a message board? Yeah, total assholes...

Yawn. Heroes don’t pat themselves on the back or seek attention. Real vets I know don’t want to talk about what they did and don’t want to be congratulated. They want to forget.

Nobody called themselves a hero or patted themselves on the back in this thread.

I know a lot of veterans. I don’t know one who doesn’t have a lot of respect for Memorial Day.

No, they didn’t, but you should be able to pat yourself on the back. This is the shit I’m talking about. Our society is so fucking “cool” and cynical that we now mock people who risk their lives to allow us to lead the easiest lives in the history of the planet. Buncha hipster douchebags.

I think we can have the proper respect for fallen military members while also noting that too many children are being murdered. Sadness and contemplation aren't finite. I've got plenty to go around!

A single child being murdered is “too many.” Wouldn’t you agree?

Well, yeah, there's no acceptable number of child murders, but we should still acknowledge the enormity of widespread school shootings.

I guess kids are The Troops now, risking their lives every day to half-pay attention in AP chem.

I don't know what it says about me, but I was more shocked and saddened by the former model who jumped to her death in New York with her 7 year old kid than I was about the school shooting.

I don’t want to get in another emotional debate about it, so let’s ignore the whole gun argument for a second... are kids really risking their lives more at school than in any other aspect of life? Many keep stating that this is some sort of epidemic as though it is fact, but any non-biased statistical analysis I read says the opposite. Is there data out there I’m missing?

Surely you agree that the article in the OP is complete horse shit, right?

The initial "fact" reported in this thread that more children than soldiers are dying is undoubtedly untrue as the DOD doesn't always report the deaths of "military advisors" and others for operational security reasons. They'll also misclassify combat deaths as accidents, or just attribute accidental deaths to natural causes. They cant just have a press release that says "Five brave operators died today fighting on behalf of the Asad regime against Islamic extremists in western Syria" people would fucking freak.

100% of the former military I know went because they didn't have any job or college prospects out of high school. They weren't exactly going with the goal of defending my ability to post on a message board.

Anyway, NOBODY loves the military more than me.

But they signed up to defend our country and knew the risks. Little Joshua was just at school trying to get an education.

This is a meaningless statement. It’s just comparing two unrelated things and trying to act morally superior to others based on those two unrelated things.

That 100% number is wrong. I had my own job and apartment when I left. Could’ve easily gone to school if I wanted.

Same. I chose to serve out of a love of country and to secure free college.

The love of my country. The graduate degree paid for was a bonus.

Looks like being a soldier is 17x more dangerous than going to school.

Yellow journalism is alive and well.

Except you can choose not to serve. Going to K-12 is a requirement.

But I'm used to the 'murdered schoolchildren is the cost of doing business' argument by now.

Eventually it will be the child of someone that you know, or your own, and maybe that will be what it takes to change some minds.

I didn’t make that argument just now. Just pointing out what total garbage the article in the OP was.

When both sides of the debate twist facts to suit their agenda and manipulate people, it doesn’t help anyone.

No facts were twisted. More schoolchildren have been killed than military. Period. No percentages were discussed.

We still seem to be in 'acceptable number of murders' range.

It’s a completely pointless, purposely misleading headline.

If you could actually address what people say rather than trying to act morally superior, it would probably help your cause.

What are your thoughts on the first article FF posted?

Patently false. Period.

That article and headline were purposely written to elicit the following reaction:
