With enough time, and perhaps fewer new immigrants, this was the American way for whites--the "triple melting pot" of religion (formerly Protestants, Catholics, and Jews) becomes less important over time....it's just a theory and doesn't hold up today for various reasons, but still interesting when it comes to the question of religion.

It would've appeared completely insane to people of even the near-past, but definitely the mass-immigration years, that native born Americans feel they are obligated to learn Spanish to better accommodate immigrants. It would've had nothing to do with racism or "systemic oppression" or any modern nonsense, the thought process was simply that if you are moving to the United States you better fucking learn English. Could you get by in 1910 just speaking Czech? Sure, but nobody would've expected you to get out of the Czech ghetto without learning English.

The real issue behind "hablar español a prima dos" (or w/e) is not bigotry or racism, its that you are doing the immigrants a massive disservice by giving them crutches and excuses to not learn English. The path to fluency is full cultural assimilation. Try spending a few months in Clermont-Ferrand or Blanquefort without being able to say much more than bonjour. France has it right though, outside the tourist areas they offer no support for non-French speakers. You either learn French or you drown. The only bilingual documents you'll get from the French government are parking tickets.

France is stridently assimilationist, more so than even the United States, and it hasn't all worked out. There is perhaps something inherent to Africans and particularly Islam that immunizes those people from being civilized. Bless the French for trying.

My first job up here in the bakken I worked at a company who employed a lot of sometimes questionable Latino immigrants. A few of these guys could barely, or couldn't speak English at all. I can vouch 100% that the children who lived back in Texas or Vegas with the mothers spoke perfect English. Maybe this is just a small sample size, but the children of the immigrants seem to still give a fuck about advancing in our society.
