I think that's exactly right. If you think you need a bat at the deadline there will be guys that you don't have to give up the farm to get.
Hopefully they don't need a pitcher, because they DID give up the farm last year to get a .500 arm!

That ain't the farm, unless your farm is one of those shitty weed infested 12 x 8 gardens in Bridgeport

12-6 in the NL! It's almost like he played for a shitty AL team. I wonder how that team is doing without him. hmmmmmm.

Throw in Britton and we'll take Machado for Russell and Schwarber. Win the WS, and next year move Baez to SS and Happ to 2B. And sign Harper. Of course, none of this will happen.

Yeah.. Machado at short is no good, GG 3rd baseman.. Below avg short. If Baltimore won't accept a reasonable offer we just sign him or Harper in 5 months and lose nobody. Good problems to have.

Dealing with the Angelos family is an exercise in futility. At the same time the Cubs have a deluded belief Schwarber's true nature

Every team has a "lotta arms" in their farm system. That doesn't mean they are any good.

The cubs went pitching heavy the last 2 years, The same guys who had Tyler Glasnow as #1 tgink the Cubs arms aren't good.. I'm happy to read this.. They don't know dick.

Hopefully, I read 312 correctly, but the Cubs drafted an obscene amount of pitching prospects the last two years early and often.

If a handful of those guys don't find impact roles on the major league roster then it will be tough to continue on with the success the Cubs have found.

Need to be able to bring up cheap cost controlled arms when all these position player contracts begin to expire.

Everyone knows the Cubs aren’t going to be able to re-sign everyone. Strike now for Machado or later this winter for Harper. Punch your ticket to the World Series a couple more times then worry about these decisions:

Rizzo 2020
Zobrist 2020
Baez 2021
Lester 2021
Quintana 2021
Hendricks 2021
Bryant 2022
Russell 2022
Schwarber 2022
Contreras 2023
Almora 2023
Darvish 2024
Heyward 2024
Happ 2024

when the times comes.

Make the trade. If you lose out on Machado in the offseason, move Baez to short and sign Castro to play 2B. Easy.

I would make the trade too and hope to land Harper or him in the offseason.

I don't think there is any way Machado foregoes free agency. There just is no reason to even if they were to acquire him and make a great offer. Why accept a great offer when that offer will still be on the table in the off season AND multiple teams bidding will likely result in an even better offer.

I see his free agency essentially being a matter of who will offer the most money for two years of service. All of his offers will include opt outs after two years which returns him to the FA market as a 28 year old (unless he pulls a Heyward and significantly underperforms). The talk of $300 million over 10 years is irrelevant because is really nothing more than a fiction. The team that signs him in two years is the team that will have to worry about that 10 year contract. The current team really only needs to concern itself with 2 years.

So, I don't think the team is going to be all that important to him in FA as he will be rebooting in two years. He will be looking at the two year windfall. I think this changes the view of the market as I think a team like the Sox have denuded their team of payroll obligations to the point that guaranteeing 70-80 million over two years will have no impact on their ability to operate. There are very few teams that will be able to spend as indiscriminately as the Sox for that short of a window, essentially winning a battle of attrition. At the same time, the Sox will be able to feature a lineup that has a chance to compete even with that one payroll black hole with Moncada, Machado, Abreu, Jimenez, Castillo, Davidson, Sanchez and Anderson as well as a staff of Rodon, Kopech, Lopez, and two more from the likes of Giolitto, Stephens, Dunning and Hansen.

In conclusion, the only way to look at a Machado trade is that it is a short term buy. Is Russell+ too high a price in that scenario. I don't see how you can argue that it is. Russell and Schwarber? I still think the trade is putting you in line for a WS, which justifies all moves. Anyway, what are you REALLY giving up in that trade? Russell and Almora or Happ? The balance starts to move unfavorably but I still say that is an acceptable price.

But they're cousins,
Identical cousins all the way.

I heard the cousin reference with no caveat several times over the last few days. Nice reporting.

Next time you drive down 26th street between Stewart and shields on the south side of street take a look at those bush league "gardens" that's the Chicago white sox farm.
