Mowing a well-maintained lawn (especially in May and early June) is one of the small, yet wonderful, pleasures of home ownership. I've only got a third of an acre, but i can't wait for Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings to bust out the mower and escape for a little while. My kids mow the neighbors lawn, but nobody cuts a blade of our grass but me.

I have a pretty small lawn and it takes about 45 minutes to cut, trim and blow away the grass. Like others have mentioned it is kind of relaxing
and I enjoy trying to keep it looking good. We have a couple people on the block that take it pretty seriously. I bought an electric lawn mower
last year and it works pretty well, the only downside is that it isn't self propelled. Overall it ends up being a decent workout pushing the thing.
Works out well so now all my yard implements are battery operated and I don't have to mess with gas or oil anymore.

My dad was definitely obsessed with his lawn. I don't think he personally cared about it, but his concern came from what his neighbors would think of him if he allowed it to grow a quarter inch beyond what was appropriate in Sauganash.

It was often a source of tension between us as he would cite a self-diagnosed heart condition as the reason why I had to go out there at 8:00 on a Sunday and mow.

Lawn care (edging, weed whacking, mowing) was my responsibility for both my parents and grandparents house since I was like 10. I was also tasked with tilling and planting the vegetable garden for both each spring.

Because of that I've become a enormously judgemental asshole of people's lawns.

If I ever end up buying a property with a lawn because of years of conditioning I will have to go all out maintaining the lawn/garden.

Though, I do enjoy and am jealous of the desert-scaped yards in the Southwest. They still look really good without any of the required maintenance of Midwest yards.

Our yard is kinda shitty (lots of weeds and crab grass), but usually I do enjoy mowing. The yards do look nice when they are fresh cut.

Mine is the exact same size. And you make a good point, that the late Spring time period is great for lawns. By August, most of us throw our hands up as the grass is dead in patches and looks unsightly. I refuse to water my lawn as it is a waste of a precious resource. I see these guys with in ground sprinkler systems that go off at high noon and just shake my head.

My favorite are the corporate campuses running their sprinklers when it's pouring outside.

A warning: Last year my wife decided we wanted our lawn to look nice and green and full with no weeds. We hired a company to spray every month or so. The lawn looked fantastic and two of my dogs died short times later. I'm not sure if there is a connection or not,but I'll never spray again....FUCK IT!

OMFG, I know! I saw that along Woodfield Rd a few weeks back. It's a flipping monsoon outside, and they are running sprinklers.

Our development has about 40 acres of prairie area including a big easement between my yard and neighbors behind us. As such, we get an invasion of weeds. I spot spray every time I cut. Otherwise, the weeds would overrun the yard in no time.

i do my 2 acres in about 2 hours. i generally get home early on friday and do it. put my sound canceling buds on and decompress from the work week.

i don't obsess much over it. we have a brand new septic and well and both those area could use some help. but otherwise, i seed in the fall, trimec in the spring, and fertilize in the late spring. those applications are done in liquid form with a sprayer.

Weed control actually is pretty easy (on a smaller lawn, I can't speak for those of you with the big lawns). Several years ago i had a more widespread problem with weeds and used one application of a Scotts weed and feed which knocked down probably 80% of the problem. Since then I spot spray and hand remove any weeds I find and it has been pretty easy. I do not water unless i am actively trying to grow seed. I use Milorganite organic fertilizer which is very slow release and does wonders keeping the grass green even during mild drought situations. I also mow very high which helps crowd out any new weeds that try to sneak in. My lawn kicks the SHIT out of all the TruGreen yards around me and I really dont have to do too much. Between the Milorganite applications and the rain we have been getting, my lawn is exploding with growth. Oh yeah - Aeration each fall is a HUGE plus, it make an ENORMOUS difference in getting a super thick lawn.

i have a mixture of bluegrass and ryegrass. id say 80% of lawns in the northern midwest are mostly bluegrass.

we had bermuda grass at our first house (yes in northern illinois) the people before had it trugreened and it would usually be gorgeous apparenlty. i didn't it was great. didn't green up until end of may and went dormant in like early september.

Some dude in my neighborhood has Bermuda and it is only now coming out of dormancy and it looks like shit. I'm gonna keep an eye on it as the heat of the summer approaches and see how well it flourishes. It may do great but there is no way i would want my lawn sleeping until Memorial Day each Spring.

Whatever the hell grows on this sand knoll. I believe it is a mix of Kentucky Blue that browns out, some perenial rye and creeping red fescue.. And crab.. Lots and lots of crab.

Same here. I'm actually still the same way with the snow, even in my current condition. It looks funny I guess, but things like that have to be done a certain way by me for me to feel comfortable. Oddly the first thing I did after my stroke was to mow the lawn. Showered and then to the hospital.

whats funny is that whenever something comes up that dan is unaware of or has never done due to his silver spoon like "peanut butter and jelly go together? interesting never had it"

NOT ONE of the others on the show mention its because his parents are super rich. like they are horrified to make fun of him about it. one of our best friends growing up and into college's grandfathers brought retreading tires back from the germans in ww2. they've built an empire of it. we made fun of him all the time because of all the crap he never had to do.
