Only heard part, but it was something about a new law in Alaska that allows people to shoot hibernating bear cubs. He had a couple of callers but then moved on to the NFL announcement; not sure if he revisited it.

Something about how it was now legal to shine a light into their den. A caller said that some are already allowed to do this if it is "sustenance meat." The caller started out like he knew what he was talking about but backtracked after Bernstein got bitchy, so I'm not sure how it got resolved.

The Trump administration is moving to reverse Obama-era rules barring hunters on some public lands in Alaska from baiting bears with bacon and doughnuts and using spotlights to shoot mother bears and their cubs hibernating in dens.

The National Park Service issued notice Monday of its intent to amend regulations for sport hunting and trapping in national preserves to bring the federal rules in line with Alaska state law.

Under the proposed changes hunters will also be allowed to hunt bears with dogs, kill wolves and pups in their dens and use motor boats to shoot swimming caribou.

Expanding hunting rights on federal lands has been a major priority for Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, a former Montana congressman who displays big-game trophies in his office at the department's Washington headquarters.

I have zero issues with hunters who want to feed themselves or their families instead of turning to factory farming. In proper context, most trophy hunting is also misunderstood. Especially the high profile hunts in Africa that can feed a local tribe for months as well as fund conservation efforts for months, all to kill a problem animal. Classic modern liberal mindset. Oh my god fuck this hunter who just killed a rampaging cannibalistic male lion who was decimating the lion cub population in the area.

The rules in parts of the West that the Obama administration targeted were borderline punitive towards animals. In some of those states the ranchers are more powerful than the hunting community. The hunting community are often the best, most reasonable form of conservationist. These ranchers often just want to kill shit so it doesn't take money out of their pockets and they are buoyed by the small amount of asshole hunters. It's a complex issue. Even those nutters who took over the vacant government building and faced off with the FBI had some decent points if people stopped to listen. The government should not be involved in that shit. Let the ranchers and the conservationists use the law. Regulation is almost always overreach. Obama was great at that. I voted for him twice but Im honest enough to have had problems with him then, and now.

I kind of sorta understand the conservation angle of trophy hunters, but the process with which they execute MANY of the hunts is not respectable. Taking a wild animal out of it's natural habitat and plopping it down in foreign territory where it has no idea what's going on is hardly a challenge.

What do you think of shooting denned up or hibernating families of animals?

Btw, the Obama efforts to continue Clinton and Bush's program of reintroducing an alpha predator Canadian wolf into the northwest I think has been a colossal failure.
