What would prevent you from buying one, price perhaps?

Yeah, I would think if I got one, I'd just rent a bigger gas vehicle for vacations when I need the range.

My question would be how does the battery hold up in Chicago winters/summers? Does the range drop from 200 to 50 when it's -4 degrees?

60-70% range I believe. If plugged in it helps as it warms battery’s domething like that. Range is an issue for me but I live in sticks. I’ve considered one nevertheless.

I'm not in the market for a car right now. But would consider it. If they could get the cost difference under $10,000 it would definitely be worth it to me.

That does seem to be the biggest thing holding the market back. Keep in mind the market is being propped up by government incentives. Luckily, if folks like Tesla keep dumping capital into development, the costs will come down. There are just a lot of skeptics mainly in the traditional auto crowd.

I don't really care. I think Musk is a genius, and he is pushing a lot of great and crazy ideas. The world needs folks like him to move us forward.

That's 3 hours of driving in a day. I'm guessing a lot of people do that enough to make it a dealbreaker.

You also run into issues with charging if you stay somewhere outside of your garage overnight.

Well sure, but there is a huge % of the market where those issues are of no concern.

I doubt it. Pretty much every viable gas car that has existed in the past few decades has had to have at least a 300 mile range, and that is with gas stations readily available that take about 5 minutes to fill up.

The Nissan Leaf was a pretty big failure and they had virtually no competition in that price range because the distance between charges was too small. The new ones don't seem to be doing great either.

Even if it only happens twice a year, being concerned about being stranded because you are in your car for 3 hours in a day is a dealbreaker for most.

In Chicago, there are times where you can spend more than 3 hours in your car and go far less than 200 miles.

I'm surprised the electric car makers haven't incorporated an option to accept a removable battery pack that could get you around 10 miles in an emergency. Something you could keep in the car, or even rent/return at a gas station.

I’ve wondered the same thing—why not have “mini trailer” battery backs? Perhaps the size of a dog house. You could exchange them like propane tanks anywhere, and simply plug them in and pull the small trailer. The range could really be extended when you’re going on a long trip.

Exactly. That is where the criticism is coming from. Folks don't believe the technology will viable and widely accepted in the upcoming decade.

I am not weighing in on which way folks should go. I am simply making the counter case to the electric car mania that some believe in.

this is why im not going electric. i only drive 22 miles a day total, for work. i could easily buy a nissan leaf. i even have a garage, so charging isnt a problem either.

my problem is lithium batteries, in their current form, are not a great solution. theyre too expensive, not enough capacity and take too long to charge. if you took a nissan leaf, kept everything the same, but magically increased the range from 100 miles to 300 miles, and charges in 15 minutes, it would be TOTALLY different for daily use. but that can be said about all electric cars.

and batteries will get there. we have so many ways to do it... its just not out of labs yet. thats why tesla invested so heavily in their gigafactory. they built it to accommodate rapid changes in battery tech, because they know its coming. so yea, while things might be rough right now for the model 3, i dont think this will be the case in 10 or 20 years.

I've heard that the taxi edition of the Prius (and maybe all Prii? Just not a thing consumers do?) has a battery pack that drops out and can be replaced immediately/quickly with a fully-charged battery pack and then sent back out on the road.

Here's something no one has ever been able to answer for me- is an electric car a net environmental gain? It takes a lot of energy to create those big batteries in the first place. Then coal is burning somewhere to supply the electricity. These young social justice goofs act like it's magic. I have nothing against electric cars and the Tesla looks fucking cool, but I'd really like a straight answer on how green the cars actually are.

I mentioned that earlier in the thread.

Longer term, we are going to have solar and wind arrays that will generate significant power (they are growing rapidly). Also, the country has moved from a majority coal to a plurality of natural gas for power generation. The battery technologies may eventually allow for solar on houses and car to capture and store energy. Eventually this may all make sense. Or someone will figure out biofuels or cold fussion and make whole new technology leaps.

My point was that Tesla is not the only potential path for the future of cars.

It will be interesting to follow this. I think their biggest mistake has been trying to build the cars themselves. They have the best technology and would be a great and profitable company if they just licensed out their tech to companies that actually know how to mass produce cars at a profit. (Ford, GM, Toyota, etc.)

there is only ONE Tesla, and it's alive and well:

Jeff Keith, Frank Hannon, Brian Wheat, and Troy Lucketta.

Fuck all other incarnations of Tesla.

That one didn't bother me as they actually did need a dummy load for the test of that rocket and the car was a fraction of the cost of launching and risking a multi-million dollar satellite in case the test launch failed.

thats not the issue. charging is still a pain. when (and it will happen) you can charge your car in 10 minutes and go 200+ miles on that charge... then electric cars will be everywhere.

Uh oh...now Musk claims there is a saboteur (or saboteurs):

Quote:
From: Elon Musk
To: Everybody
Subject: Some concerning news
June 17, 2018
11:57 p.m.

I was dismayed to learn this weekend about a Tesla employee who had conducted quite extensive and damaging sabotage to our operations. This included making direct code changes to the Tesla Manufacturing Operating System under false usernames and exporting large amounts of highly sensitive Tesla data to unknown third parties.

The full extent of his actions are not yet clear, but what he has admitted to so far is pretty bad. His stated motivation is that he wanted a promotion that he did not receive. In light of these actions, not promoting him was definitely the right move.

However, there may be considerably more to this situation than meets the eye, so the investigation will continue in depth this week. We need to figure out if he was acting alone or with others at Tesla and if he was working with any outside organizations.

As you know, there are a long list of organizations that want Tesla to die. These include Wall Street short-sellers, who have already lost billions of dollars and stand to lose a lot more. Then there are the oil & gas companies, the wealthiest industry in the world — they don't love the idea of Tesla advancing the progress of solar power & electric cars. Don't want to blow your mind, but rumor has it that those companies are sometimes not super nice. Then there are the multitude of big gas/diesel car company competitors. If they're willing to cheat so much about emissions, maybe they're willing to cheat in other ways?

Most of the time, when there is theft of goods, leaking of confidential information, dereliction of duty or outright sabotage, the reason really is something simple like wanting to get back at someone within the company or at the company as a whole. Occasionally, it is much more serious.

Please be extremely vigilant, particularly over the next few weeks as we ramp up the production rate to 5k/week. This is when outside forces have the strongest motivation to stop us.

If you know of, see or suspect anything suspicious, please send a note to [email address removed for privacy] with as much info as possible. This can be done in your name, which will be kept confidential, or completely anonymously.

Looking forward to having a great week with you as we charge up the super exciting ramp to 5000 Model 3 cars per week!

Will follow this up with emails every few days describing the progress and challenges of the Model 3 ramp.

Thanks for working so hard to make Tesla successful,
Elon

Looks like short sellers are getting their asses handed to them. Stock closing on 900, up almost 400 in the last week.
