the argument is that players are still allowed to express themselves during the anthem with "i cant' breath" hoodies or some crap and that the nba is supposedly already putting much more money into "equality" type programs (verifiable?) than the nfl.

i'm like the nfl has made more millionaires out of african americans than most professional sports. and their numbers are down. when numbers are down everyone suffers.

I understand that but it doesn't change the fact that Kerr directly said that the NBA was more understanding and tolerant of players kneeling for the anthem. That's just not true, and it kind of undercuts the rest of his message.

Technically, he said the NBA understood WHY they were protesting and that it wasnt intended to disrespect the military.

Right but the NBA's actions suggest that isn't true. Otherwise they wouldn't have a rule in place requiring players to "stand and line up in a dignified posture" during the anthem.

Sure , we have to stand for the anthem too but we do it the right way . Not at all like the icky NFL is making their players do .

Reality is that the rhetoric from leadership is different. Nothing more or less other than maybe writing on shoes. Mark Cuban was out IMMEDIATELY making sure players didn't kneel.

Kerr makes this a free speech issue ("...proud to be in a league that understands patriotism in America is about free speech..."), implying that the NFL's rule is counter to the concept of free speech.

At this point, it doesn't matter the other ways the Association fosters and encourages free speech, because Kerr is clearly discussing free speech as it applies to peaceful anthem protest, which the NBA and now the NFL both expressly proscribe. Who. You. Crappin'?

Yet forcing people to kneel is very Catholic.

I was told a business can do whatever they want in regard to suppressing speech. Why is the NFL different than social media corps? Since I have a problem with what Twitter, Google, and Facebook are doing, naturally I have a problem with the NFL suppression.

But honestly, if the Bulls were good, it would take a lot to keep me from being interested in the NBA. That's my primary problem with the league right now. They should've rigged the draft for Chicago instead of Sacramento.

Also can't draw up an out of bounds play that doesn't involve his power forward running the point.

I'm fairly certain Hockey Gay, very drunk and fresh off his ICU visit, could coach the Warrirors to the WCF. Any of us can. Except maybe Brick, who would be upset that there is too much agreement that his team is extremely good and would purposefully sabotage them to spur debate and discourse.

Kerr had a bad game in game 4 but I don’t think he could’ve done much about tonight. They badly miss Iggy, Steph seems disengaged when KD is on the court, Klay remains inconsistent, and KD is reverting to his OKC bad iso play days.

I’m more in the camp of Kerr is overrated than Kerr is good but I can’t put tonight on him. It’s primarily on Steph.

Well there’s a reason we have a huge thread dedicated to trashing deadspin. You should have put that article there.

Your Woke Bae narrative doesn’t work here. I’m probably the most outspoken NBA apologist here and I started this thread. The link you quoted even acknowledged the hypocrisy even though it was a garbage, false article typical of deadspin standards these days.

Anyway, this particular passage is ridiculous:

Quote:
One could argue that the only way that NFL players could get their message on racism heard is to kneel, while NBA players enjoy multiple varied opportunities to speak their minds, which makes the anthem rule less relevant. The Golden State Warriors shut down a trip to the White House after winning their 2017 championship. LeBron James seems to enjoy calling Trump a “bum.” Coaches speak more critically of the U.S. than a lot of Democratic politicians.

The first part of the first sentence is inarguably wrong and it’s embarrassing it got published. As for the rest, I don’t think the NFL prohibits “multiple varied opportunities to speak their minds” to its players. Their champion players can and have refused to visit the White House, any nfl player is free to call the president a bum on twitter without league reprimand, and their coaches are free to speak their mind on whatever they want. It’s just that usually they care more about winning football games than political issues.

The part of me that used to like Deadspin and still likes Magary’s non political columns will be sad when it goes but others are right here, it’s death is coming sooner than later. This is just straight up very substandard journalism even for a glorified blog.

Yeah Kerr is talking out the side of his ass on this. The NBA
Is Progressive in some areas but for the most part it is the same as any other league.

In addition to its policy on the anthem is the dress code policy requiring players to be in a shirt and tie if they are going to be on the bench.

I do appreciate his thoughts that the NFL and NBA fanbases are radically different people. NBA fans support anthem protests. NFL fan don't. I would guess most NBA fans are NFL fans as well.

Deadspin has some nerve writing a "let's slow down on calling the NBA the Woke League" column when they were one of the biggest engines, if not the biggest, of that reputation.

The NBA was regarded as the "Woke" league decades before the term or Deadspin itself was in operation. They weren't the engines for anything.

The fact remains that the NBA was at the forefront of all major sports leagues on a number of issues i.e. Black Head coaches and GMs, Black Ownership of franchises. etc.

In comparison to other leagues their record speaks for itself.

Actually the NBA probably is becoming less progressive as the years go by.

The defense from the libtards regarding Kerr is sad. You can't claim a moral high-ground, citing the NBA as an example...the "well, it was agreed on by the players" is fucking weak-sauce.

Hm, baseball still brings in almost twice the money that the NBA does, you'd never guess from the way people beat off to the "ascendancy" of the NBA.

I like the four major sports in this order- Baseball, Hockey, Football, then Basketball. I usually enjoy the NBA Playoffs. I have been pretty underwhelmed with the Conference Finals Games as they have been quite sloppy at the end. I find the NBA cheerleading (ascendancy as you call it) a tad annoying because regular season basketball is just meh, and they still haven't figured out how to make the last five minutes of the game take less than a half hour. To each his own though, unless it's soccer!

The most recognizable athlete in the world is an NBA player. Before him it was an NBA player.
