I admire the intrepid courage of Gizmodo Media Group to doxx a guy who plays a stupid character on a moderately popular podcast. No one else will take the risks they do.

I think what I said about Caity Weaver the other day is true for PFT Commentor as well. They are ostensibly mocking these popular social media driven idiocies but beneath that it's obvious that they actually are the very thing they ridicule. In Weaver's case it's rather harmless. I wouldn't necessarily say the same for Barstool. But this style is the new irony. It's irony on top of irony. Double secret irony.

I don't think it is an ethical question to reveal PFT's name. He's an entertainer operating under an odd stage name, really. I question the value of making an entire piece specifically about revealing his identity, but not necessarily the ethics.

However, the ethical issue actually at hand is that the author, regardless of whether it was at the behest of Deadspin, aimed to engage in a personal vendetta against a third party, and used PFT's identity to do it. To make matters worse, the "no significant criminal history" line makes it sure look like Deadspin/Wagner really wanted PFT to have a juicy arrest record, and upon finding nothing, they continued on with the piece anyway just to try to hurt another facet of the Barstool brand. That's unethical as all hell, as far as I'm concerned.

There are any number of reasons why it’s easy to goof on Bill Simmons, and all of them are honestly pretty solid. Many of these have to do with the way he acts—grandiose and aggrieved and prickly-petty and, now that he’s ascended to demi-mogul status, prone to dilatory rich-guy extemporizing on The Future Of Apps. Fewer of those have to do with what Simmons has actually made, which amounts to enough Extremely Of Their Time columns and mailbags to stretch from Brookline, Mass. to Saturn and some mostly pretty good websites and sports-related documentaries. He has proudly refused to evolve as a writer and has definitely not seen a new movie of any kind since Rounders came out in 1998, but you have to hand it to him—the man has come up with some good stuff. None of that good stuff, though, has been a chant.

Which is fine! Coming up with chants is for children and drunk guys named Kevin. It is, to pick an example at random, not nearly as impressive an achievement as building a long and successful career in sports media. But it’s worth mentioning here because Simmons just fucking loves coming up with chants for fans to do at sporting events, and also because these chants are always extremely bad.

I also didn't know that Wagner is the one who has written the bulk of Deadspin's hit pieces on Barstool (or attempts at same). I thought she was a staff writer who just got an assignment. This is definitely a personal vendetta, and makes the PFT soft doxxing unethical as all hell.

The only thing to really say in the face of a result as shocking and unlikely as this one is to acknowledge that sometimes shit just happens.
