I think what I said about Caity Weaver the other day is true for PFT Commentor as well. They are ostensibly mocking these popular social media driven idiocies but beneath that it's obvious that they actually are the very thing they ridicule. In Weaver's case it's rather harmless. I wouldn't necessarily say the same for Barstool. But this style is the new irony. It's irony on top of irony. Double secret irony.

Such people (not sure if these two are examples) often wrap their potshots in what is supposed to be parody or irony (but really isn't; they're not interested in true criticism but scoring points and taking down the enemy*), or they attempt to sell themselves as someone is forcing us to listen to some hard truths. But a truth that's told with bad intent beats all the lies you can invent. More rhetorical sleight of hand is no different.

I don't think it is an ethical question to reveal PFT's name. He's an entertainer operating under an odd stage name, really. I question the value of making an entire piece specifically about revealing his identity, but not necessarily the ethics.

However, the ethical issue actually at hand is that the author, regardless of whether it was at the behest of Deadspin, aimed to engage in a personal vendetta against a third party, and used PFT's identity to do it. To make matters worse, the "no significant criminal history" line makes it sure look like Deadspin/Wagner really wanted PFT to have a juicy arrest record, and upon finding nothing, they continued on with the piece anyway just to try to hurt another facet of the Barstool brand. That's unethical as all hell, as far as I'm concerned.

The thing is, it doesn't even hurt Barstool's brand and just makes Deadspin look petty. Any Stoolie who spent 2 minutes on Google knew PFT's real name. Heck, it was on his wikipedia page and had been there since at least 2017. The NFL knew it as they had his name (next to Dan Katz and Henry Lockwood) on a list of "do not admit" at Radio Row at this year's Super Bowl.

David Roth is the easily the most talent writer at Deadspin, but even he fell victim to use of The Gawker Reassuring Exclamation, in this, yet another piece about a sports media entity that this sports media entity doesn't like:

https://deadspin.com/a-peoples-history- ... 1826267364

Quote:
There are any number of reasons why it’s easy to goof on Bill Simmons, and all of them are honestly pretty solid. Many of these have to do with the way he acts—grandiose and aggrieved and prickly-petty and, now that he’s ascended to demi-mogul status, prone to dilatory rich-guy extemporizing on The Future Of Apps. Fewer of those have to do with what Simmons has actually made, which amounts to enough Extremely Of Their Time columns and mailbags to stretch from Brookline, Mass. to Saturn and some mostly pretty good websites and sports-related documentaries. He has proudly refused to evolve as a writer and has definitely not seen a new movie of any kind since Rounders came out in 1998, but you have to hand it to him—the man has come up with some good stuff. None of that good stuff, though, has been a chant.

Which is fine! Coming up with chants is for children and drunk guys named Kevin. It is, to pick an example at random, not nearly as impressive an achievement as building a long and successful career in sports media. But it’s worth mentioning here because Simmons just fucking loves coming up with chants for fans to do at sporting events, and also because these chants are always extremely bad.

Now I get that no one forced these idiots to write in but on most dead letters they redact full email addresses. Printing them in full seems like they are trying to get their retard commenters to harass them.

I also didn't know that Wagner is the one who has written the bulk of Deadspin's hit pieces on Barstool (or attempts at same). I thought she was a staff writer who just got an assignment. This is definitely a personal vendetta, and makes the PFT soft doxxing unethical as all hell.

You’re a fucking loser Laura.

Off to a roaring start.

Interesting that they grouped this in with some of the others:

Quote:
From: Benjamin Aaron Porter <bap2150@columbia.edu>

To: Laura Wagner

Hi Laura,

I’m writing to find out your motives for releasing the personal information of one “PFT Commenter”. From one journalist to another, I am interested in learning the reasoning behind the move. On the surface, it appears to be the result of jealousy and being desperate for page views. Is this a cry for help? A personal vendetta that you had to address? I’m sure a woman of your stature has clear motivations for doxxing a relatively well-liked Internet personality.

Thank you

She should respond to that one. It's a perfectly civil email.

It’s weird that they published the letters without a response. I mean yeah, people are going to write in and bitch when you publish a shitty, pointless article doxxing someone who’s never done anything wrong.

I think he's back in June, if anyone cares...

I'm rather neutral on the barstool thing, It reminds me of the Simmons love from 10-15 years ago but with more than just a column a week. There is some stuff that I have enjoyed (I listened to PMT during football season, thought it was amusing) and other stuff that is not a good look. This is a bad look for the author. It come across as a "I don't like other things about Barstool so let's try a 'investigative piece' about someone who is generally liked cross multiple platforms!

It says more about the fall of Deadspin than anything else.

This from Tom Ley today, that the Rockets did everything right but sometimes the shots just don't fall and life's crazy that way, is aggressively ignorant.

Quote:
The only thing to really say in the face of a result as shocking and unlikely as this one is to acknowledge that sometimes shit just happens. It’s a heartening thing to consider, for anyone who isn’t a Rockets fan, because it’s a reminder that one of the more annoying cliches that pundits like to shout is actually one of the truest: That’s why you play the games. No matter how much the Rockets may wish otherwise, basketball games do not unfold within a computer simulation, and the percentages, no matter how inescapable they have previously proven themselves, do not always yield the expected results.

One thing I would say is "maybe they should have stopped jacking up so many bad threes once they were in their heads and their failures were begetting more failure."

Could've written the same thing almost word for word about the election. These people and their worldview, I don't think even religious fanatics are so convinced that they are Right About Everything (--and that's OK!).

This Is How It Feels When You're The Only Good Player On An NBA Finals Team

LeBron James turned in a heroic, 51-point performance in what came so close to becoming an incredible Game 1 victory for the Cavs. Instead, this might have been the worst night of LeBron’s basketball-playing life, with multiple tortuous twists combining for a nightmare loss.

None of us could possibly have any idea how it feels to be LeBron James, at any moment of his marvelous existence, but these photos from the game give us a window into his intensely tested soul.

Look and despair, mortals.

His poor soul. Maybe Jason can move it for him.

Et tu, Ed Zitron?

Quote:
It will probably not surprise you that, over the course of watching basketball up close, the human brain boggles at the sheer size of these lads. These absolute units are nigh on seven feet tall and move at insane speeds, which is something you already know. It is striking, even as these superheroes do their thing, how different LeBron is. you really got to see why LeBron was so frustrated.

In how he asserted himself—much more urgently than anyone else on either team—and how uniquely he bent the game to his will, Game 1 felt like LeBron James’ private shootout—a serious game played by a serious man in a serious way, rarely celebrating, always at least a little mad, trying his hardest while his teammates bumbled around, one man doing everything he could to win. The Warriors didn’t deserve to win, but neither did the Cavaliers. LeBron’s face was a study in silent anguish long before J.R. delivered himself of that truly heroic fuck-up.

LOOK AT HIS BODY. Everyone on the team is Bad At Basketball except for LeBron, who is Actually Good. And that's okay!

The rest of the article is just bitching about the admittedly insufferable rich techies at Warriors games, but has anyone figured out how exactly Ed Zitron is worth like millions of dollars from doing public relations?

Yeah, fuck you, seven-year-old! That'll show you for not being LeBron James.

Quote:
As we wait out the formality that these lopsided, nightmarish NBA Finals have become, it’s still worth acknowledging just how impressive it is that LeBron James has carried such a messed up, broken Cavs team through the Eastern Conference.
